Quicksync and MVP are exactly what you want for gaming and encoding. If not for those then I'd say go x79 with a view to Haswell later. You can oc a 3820 just fine using bclk and turbo multipliers and for anyone using ambient temps then IB-E is looking a disappointment. A good SB/SB-E looks to have a good chance of outperforming any IB-E on ambient air (discounting Quicksync/MVP) based on nothing but temperature scaling.
Other than possible future upgrades I can't think of any reason for a 24/7 machine to use a 3820 over a 2600K

Pretty much agreed - bclk tuning (and therefore better memory tuning), extra pcie lanes and haswell are basically the only reasons. That and im yet to find an 1155 board that will happily run 4 dimms at 2133mhz without needing an epic voltage bump. From a hobby aspect I do find x79 more appealing. With Haswell on the horizon and a possible price drop of 6 core SB-E then as well its still a good choice for a lot of people. You wont break records on ambient air with any of the setups, but its possible youll have more fun trying with the x79.
x79 does still hold a few advantages, its certainly not obsolete .

Im back on p67 until I get my replacement board for s2011. After being on X79 for a while, and now going back to sb, I really miss it. Its not picky with memory, it clocks 8 dimms with ease, and is extremely stable. I would take a 4.7-4.8ghz 3930k over a 5ghz 2600k any day.
It looks like IB will be even better at clocking memory, and even if it doesnt do 5ghz 24/7 on air, I still welcome it.
yea my UD5h runs 2133 without any voltage bump all day long with 4DIMMs and 16GB total, it is a 2133mhz kit tho. Thereis no need to increase voltages other than Vcore for 3rd gen t least not on air cooling.

Thanks for the info on 4 dimms - that at least is a massive step forward from P67/z68. Even the ROG boards on P67/z68 struggled with clocking once a second pair was added @ 2133mhz.
So has the clock ceiling just moved up? For example is it now a struggle to run 4 dimms at 2400mhz? Or are both pairs of slots just as good as each other period?
anyone using 32 gb? which of these boards is best at 4x8gb? or should i start another thread for that?

This would suggest you are wrong. If you have a 2600k it stacks up quite nicely against a 3770k it would seem, not a lot of difference at all. In a nutshell 95% of people today want a fast, great performing, low power, low temp CPU. When IB hits it seems it won't meet any but one of those points. I'm sure given 6-12 months a new revision or two will remedy the issue but at launch? IB looks like it'll be a bit of a lame duck. Personally, given the choice between a 2600k and retail release of a 3770k, I'd pick the 2600k. The 3770k has too many shortcomings for my liking.

You're in the wrong place if you think its a lame duck. Sandybridge is just particularly good at ambient air clocking, its the first time theres been such a tiny gap between sub zero and air. I wouldnt expect that to happen again any time soon, its back to the old ways again. You'll just have to spend more than £30 on cooling to see big numbers.
Its yet to be seen what virtu MVP brings to real world gaming as well (yes I know its a z77 feature, but IB does way better than SB due to the new iGPU).
TEC/peltier could be a nice solution for IVY, since heat output is not huge but thermal resistance is. A 154w cooled by water will prolly drop that thermal resistance significantly.
While 24/7 ocs will probably be lower on average, getting rid of the dam mhz cap we see on SB is a win for IB in my books.

totally agree with you there, as the power consumption isn't that high for all that heat, and the coolers don't get so hot as if the CPu was running that hot either. Good thermal paste and great contact as well as rapid heat transit is very important for this platform, you can't just toss on a water cooler and call it a day.
Well I don't talk about anand results. In a nutshell as you say I would say when over 4.5Ghz IB is like SB +500Mhz, so it looks like a nice boost to me. Pair that with lower power consuption and a more powerfull iGPU and you have a winner. Oh I almost forgot, as we are in XS, when you go cold you forget about it.
