The system power on the tweaktown test is load 456 for Kepler and 391 for 7970 (factory). That is a 65 watt difference on load and probably a good percentage more without a huge percent more in performance (appears to trade wins based on games that favor AMD/Nvidia). Should be good for prices, but isn't no slam dunk clear winner. The temps are higher, but Nvidia is using a less aggressive fan profile than AMD (so its quieter).

Draws another 60W in idle and and 70W under load compared to ref stock 7970..... I interpret their game tests as "trades blows with 7970...GTX680 wins on points"
AMD really do have idle power draw nailed down![]()
Hopefully this power draw is some error from TT. Otherwise it will lose to HD7970 in perf/W ratio. Not even talking about 7870.
Must be some sort of miscalculation. Otherwise this Nvidia video which was posted earlier is only half true. Fastest GPU, but not even close of being most efficent GPU.
What is needed is an super clocked 7970 maybe they can call it HD7980. Since overclocked 7970 scale really well i imagine a OCed 7970 to counter GTX 680 very well, but price for 7970 has to be dropped to around the 450-500 mark and 7980 has to be around 500-550 mark.
Coming Soon
we've seen power consumption (and more) from PC Per,THG,Guru3d and TweakTown and only one of them puts the 680 as more power hungry so maybe it wouldbe better not to trust the minority.
This will not happen. At least no name change, if only clocks are changed.
Guys which utility supports this? I got the AB 2.20-15 beta and it doesnt show clocks ..... I need it asap !!!!

They have tested the card with 300.83 drivers but version 300.99 is flying around. Maybe this matters.

This is the official launch driver for GeForce GTX 680 – the fastest, most efficient GPU ever built.
Explore GeForce GTX 680 and its new SMX architecture on GeForce.com.
GeForce R300 drivers introduce several new industry-leading gaming features and will be released using versions 300.xx to 301.xx.
New Feature Summary:
•NVIDIA GPU Boost Technology – dynamically maximizes clock speeds based on workload of the game to push performance to new levels and bring out the best in every game. Learn more on GeForce.com.
•NVIDIA FXAA Technology – shader-based anti-aliasing technology available from the NVIDIA Control Panel that enables ultra-fast anti-aliasing in hundreds of PC games. FXAA delivers similar quality to 4x multi-sample antialiasing (MSAA) but is up to 60% faster, enabling substantially higher performance in games. Note: This feature is disabled for games already have built-in support for FXAA. Visit GeForce.com to learn more.
•NVIDIA Adaptive Vertical Sync – dynamically enables vertical sync based on your current frame rates for the smoothest gaming experience. Visit GeForce.com to learn more.•NVIDIA Frame Rate Target – dynamically adjusts frame rate to a user specified target. Support for this feature is enabled via third party applications via NVAPI. Visit GeForce.com to learn more.
•NVIDIA 3D Vision Surround Technology – with a single GeForce GTX 680 you can expand your PC games across three displays in full stereoscopic 3D for the ultimate “inside the game” experience. NVIDIA Surround also supports triple screen gaming with non-3D Vision monitors. Visit GeForce.com to learn more.
New Surround features:
◦Add in a fourth accessory display to get access to your email, web, or other applications while you game.
◦Maximize an application to a single physical display when in Surround mode (enabled by default).
◦Confine the Windows Taskbar to the center display (enabled by default).
◦Enable bezel peeking – a feature which enables users to temporarily ‘peak’ behind the monitor bezels using a hotkey (Ctrl + Alt + B). This feature is designed to be used in conjunction with bezel corrected resolutions.
◦Enables users to add or remove resolutions from the list of Surround resolutions (only those selected will be available to applications).
◦Enables full center display acceleration for single wide display modes (center display must be connected to the master GPU).
•NVIDIA NVENC Support – adds support for the new hardware-based H.264 video encoder in GeForce GTX 680, providing up to 4x faster encoding performance while consuming less power.
Other Details
•Installs PhysX System Software v9.12.0213.
•Installs HD Audio v1.3.12.0.
•Supports OpenGL 4.2
•Supports DisplayPort 1.2 for GeForce GTX 680.
•Supports multiple languages and APIs for GPU computing: CUDA C, CUDA C++, CUDA Fortran, OpenCL, DirectCompute, and Microsoft C++ AMP.
•Supports single GPU and NVIDIA SLI technology on DirectX 9, DirectX 10, DirectX 11, and OpenGL, including 3-way SLI and SLI support on SLI-certified Intel and AMD motherboards.

It is not that simple a solution.
The overclocking idea is half useless because the gtx 680 can overclock from the sounds of it. Guru3d from the performance gains seems to OCed it, 20%-30%+ percent. Making a new 7980 will also piss off the partners selling overclocked 7970s. It will also piss off alot of early adopters.
Also dropping in the new SKU screws up the pricing of the rest of the line up too much. I.e 7970 at 450-500 means the 7950 has to drop 100-50 dollars as well. Where does the 1.5gb 7950 fit? 350? The pricing of the 7870 now has to take a price drop. AMD will be in a rough spot for pricing when the gtx 670 lands. They will still make profit and lots of it, but it shows weakness when pricing has to change all over the place.
AMD can try to give a new firmware that updates all their cards clocks, but this is a messy solution. Firmware changes I remember voids some warranties with some companies. I don't think AMD wants a bunch of people updating their firmware either because with so many people doing it, there is a good chance something could go wrong.

gtx680 load/idle: 456/206 watts
HD7970 load/idle: 389/127 watts
gtx680 eats considerably more power than HD 7970
lol tweaktown seems to be a nvidia-friendly web site. They put a lot of OCed and crossfired HD7970 results to the chart to confuse us.
Another example of if it looks too good to be true, It usually is...
But TXAA looks interesting, Visually 16x msaa for a performance hit equal to 2x msaa is pretty awesome, if true ^^

So, yeah... getting the right drivers and having the right specs is how you get help. That's called working with a company.
Beyond that, there really isn't much help unless questions arise.
Furthermore, a lot of the features of some videocards that are unique to that card do not work right unless the proper drivers are installed. Certain features that would reduce power consumption or increase clocks could potentially be broken...
Did you read the first page of the review? They seem pretty pissed at NVIDIA.
