Will it outperform HD 7870 for perf/watt? I think it will be close one. I dont think that Kepler archidecture is far better. GTX 680 is just way better optimized for games than Tahiti XT is. Job well done for nvidia. Took some time, but they did it.

This is exactly what i referred to when saying they finally made a worthy card after seeing the leaked graphs a few pages back. If the performance AND consumption numbers are true (we'll see in a couple of hours) then they achieved exactly what I was missing from their cards for long years - that nvidia realized after the Fermi fiasco, I would say - efficiency. Because I do care how much power is wasted at any given time the GPU gets power.

On the other side, it seems neither company is able to make a powerful GPGPU AND keep it power efficient at the same time while it is used for it's original purpose: gaming. Maybe that is the next step in GPU evolution. Again, congratz nvidia, you showed you can design an efficient GPU after all.

I wouldn't call an increase in performance per watt revolutionary, it's natural progression.

It's not revolutionary in general, since it is a side effect of a process shrink, but it is a revolution for nvidia, no matter how you look at it. Their perf./watt was miserable in the past years.

Here is an easy (but still not 100% accurate) way of testing it:

When the in game memory amount is ABOVE the card's actual installed capacity, check the GPU usage. If it is still at 100% then it is likely the GPU core itself chugging along. If usage drops drastically (say to 75% and lower), then memory bottlenecking is a distinct possibility. This is because the GPU will throttle itself if the memory can't keep up with its dispatch requests.

Do you know of a program that tests actual usage and not allocation? The method you outlined would work but only for situations where the mem usage is near the capacity of the card. It would be nice to have user reviews (or review sites) of different games at different settings where actual mem usage is tracked so that buyers could know what their vram needs are. For example, using AB I've seen memory allocation of 2.2-2.5GB in Skyrim and in Civ 5 at 1600p. If the GTX 680 is fast enough to warrant an upgrade, I want to know if I'll be vram limited.

I think the reason why they chose 2GB instead of a wider bus or more/bigger density chips is TXAA. It has a much lower memory footprint then a MSAA level of comparable quality. If the game supports it, 2GB will be enough for even crazy sized textures.
