Actually they love linux because they CAN do stuff that you just plain CAN'T in Windows, as well as things frequently being faster (two mouse clicks? I think you're understating that more than a little) but because things are done differently people run around crying "it's too hard!" when it's just "not the same".

Good example, starting from the desktop on a freshly installed machine install BOINC in the default manner for your OS version.
Let's assume you paid attention to the install dialogs and the network is working properly (since that's all it takes on either)
Windows:
Double click Internet Explorer icon on the desktop
Click the first use dialog license agreement
Click to accept of deny default browser setting
Enter URL for WCG
Click Download > Download
Confirm it got your OS version right and click Download Now
Double click the downloaded file
Click the confirmation that "yes you did mean to run that program"
Click license acceptance and "next" dialogs
Pick your install type, more "next" dialogs.
<possibly miss a couple of clicks here>
Restart system to get all the service hooks working
BOINC is ready to attach to a project
That's a load more than "two clicks"

Enter "sudo apt-get install boinc boinc-manager",enter>
You might get to press <enter> again part way through

haha linux lovers, you cant deny that linux takes a step in a weird uncomfortable direction for most (power?)users of a modern GUI OS.

altho I did always want an app store on my desktop, now its like my phone

and as for the sudo blablabla, that nonsence didnt even work for me on my fresh install. i had to go to the app store to install it.. and thats only after it took me an hour or two to realize thatyou could install normal things with it.


i started a thread relating to this over at ocn in the rant section. everyone was so quick to tell me how fast it is..

when it took me the better part of a night to give a fresh install of ubuntu and install boinc and get it running.. yes linux is faster when you have it all memorized, its just such a step from most OS that its a little rocky trying to transition and learn

still pondering the idea of trying to figure out how to make boinc run on startup. sounds like many hours of clicking around and trying to find

Most people don't have the foggiest idea what "sudo apt get" means.

But c'mon D_A you know as well as I that there are many examples going both ways where in linux it may be easier, and in Windows it may be easier

Besides, the installer giving you options as to where to install things and also at least presenting the license agreement to you instead of totally hiding it (even though nobody really reads it anyway) is probably a good thing, right?

Then there is the difference between "easier" and "intuitive" - linux is less intuitive and user friendly than Windows. Most people could figure out how to do the install in Windows. Most people wouldn't know how to sudo aptget BOINC in linux.

And heaven forbid you wanted to install a .deb package. I have to google that crap everytime. And don't say "it's self-extracting and it installs the same" because I tried it it didn't work, i had to use the CL.
