For the CPU part there is nothing new.
They do pretty much the same as the previous Llanos, 3870s are just binned a bit higher.

IIRC the highest CPU frequency I could use in 24/7 use was around 3.6G /w 1.41V.
You can do quick benches like 3DMark11 at 3.8G+ but then you will need to bump up the voltage heavily.

Llano was never designed to reach high CPU clocks, even it is based on Stars.
I donīt think it is the 'tuning' they made that makes it overclock worse than e.g Deneb, but the reduced power delivery (FM1 vs. AM2/3) and the crappy 32nm manufacturing process GF currently offers.

Would have loved to see Llano made by TSMC instead of GF (even with 40nm).

Donīt get me wrong, I still LOVE Llanos

That's a shame! More bad news here also: http://www.anandtech.com/show/5257/a...83870k-a83670k
These "K"s only allow for a partial unlock of 5x multiplier higher than stock! (35x for 3870k, 32x for 3670k ???)

I guess it was unreasonable to expect miracles from GF..,.. Llanos weren't really held back by bus speeds after all . I already have a F1A75V Pro though, so I will still go ahead with my LLano build. Thanks for the info as always Stilt

So if im doing Llano i may as well stick with the non unlocked parts as it has little effect on helping with OCing the CPU side at least in the end ?

Trinity should have been AMDs priorty for this year instead of DozyDozer.

    What?
As far as I know these are fully unlocked, up to 47x...
However I need to double check...

do you have Engineering Sample or Retail Chip? 35x 133 is still 4.5GHz potential, but moot if we aren't going to get anywhere close to that if they clock the same as unlocked parts like the 3850

My chip should be retail, atleast I was told so and the batch code also indicates that.
I just double checked, the chip is unlocked up to 47x (or 63x... - CPU) and the GPU is unlimited too.
The only thing is that is limited is the MainPLL (47x), but that makes no difference.

AMD press information sheet said "up to 500MHz CPU overclock" and "up to 200MHz GPU overclock".
This is being the typical overclock on "K" parts not any kind of actual limitation

Personally I would swap the memory for something faster.
Llano supports DDR-1866 by default and the MEMCLK makes a huge difference on it especially if you use the integrated graphics.

Noted, though Scan does not stock any 1866+ 8GB kits with low profile head spreaders (I *hate* stupid big heat spreaders with a vengeance heh)

    First 3870k review?
    http://www.planet3dnow.de/vbulletin/...#content_start

They didn't really get any higher than a regular 3850. 3.74GHz max that they tested. Translate German > English

I have yet to see an OC review in the hands of a review site that really knows the oddities and quirks when it comes to overclocking Llano. I think most give up after SATA SSD craps out in AHCI mode when upping BCLK, or just change multiplier to 35x and call it a day. Consider that Stilt maxed out at 3.8 with high voltage, and 3.6GHz daily in his previous post. Like he said, this platform was never meant to OC like AM3/+

Heres one , but for Linux only. Not really that useful to me...

Probably going to get the 3670k instead of 3870k. Don't need the higher stock graphics clock + shaders, so mind as well save a little bit of money

    Received some more 3870 chips..
They acted exactly the same as the first chip under sub zero temperatures so I became a bit suspicious.

It seems that it is not a cold bug causing the trouble but the new AGESA version.
Most likely the new version synchronizes some other frequency with the SCLK.
Obviously this other frequency (LCLK most likely) cannot tolerate frequencies high enough to reach the SCLK limits.

This is most likely the case since Iīve heard reports about poor SCLK overclockability on Asrock and MSI boards.
Need to get some more info.

So even with A6-3670 and A8-3870 APUs please use the old bios versions (eg. 0802TS for F1A75-M PRO).
