lol i play with 360 controller. this game was designed for that, sadly. i guess when a good UI mod that gets rid of all the consolitis UI in this game, i will switch to my G9 and Black Widow ultimate then. aiming kinda sucks with controller, but i get vibration

Agreed Lex on the UI, switching between weapons and spells, quest log, and inventory. I'm sure they were going for a minimalist streamlined approach, but they took it too far. I am completely disinterested in my character, because there is very little info there. It's just a vehicle to explore the environment and kill things.

The more I am playing it the more I am forgiving the game of the sloppiness from Bethesda.

Cons and pros so far compared to Oblivion and with strings to other RPG's of similar sort.

    *snip*

Some of these negatives and positives draws you into the game and makes you forget that you are actually sitting in front of a pc, others slaps you right in the face and tells you exactly where you are.
fullack on all your pros and cons.

the most annoying thing really is the UI - it's cumbersome. i never wasted so much time arranging my inventory in oblivion as i do now with skyrim. the map sux as well

apart from that i really like skyrim so far.

    Fullack -> Full account?

I have played a bit more now, around 20 hours +, currently level 20 if I remember right. Liking it more and more now
Even the menus are easy now, key thing is when you are going to use the menus for a longer period of time, just don't use the mouse.

I am in a bit of a bad circle now though, clearing dungeons for quests. This is a bad habit, traveling, killing, looting, selling, repeat. :p The dungeons are much more interesting, they are so different!

The biggest inventory faux pas is that things arent categorized within a list by inventory slot. General "Apparel" is not good enough. There needs to be a distinction within that list of helmets, gloves, etc. If I have Alligator mittens and Zebraskin gloves, it is tough to see/compare/equip between those items.

This is all exacerbated by the strict alphabetization of every list with no way to manually rearrange. Grrr.

    Still a fantastic game.

I'd have to agree there. Something WoW-ish for equipment management would be ideal. My only other real complaints with the game so far are:

    1) Inability to certain break things (ie: wooden boxes, barrels, etc).
    2) The lack of precise movements when on the Horse mount.
    3) Can't say I'm a huge fan of the Constellation skill area...seems too spread out and hard to get a good mental picture.
    4) Swapping abilities feels tedious. Some sort of action bar would be better.

    Things I love so far:

    1) Decent graphics and excellent water
    2) The non-linear nature of the game (including the varied responses your character can make). This makes the game feel most interesting and decidedly different from most games.
    3) The large and intricate world itself. They obviously spent a great deal of time working on it.

I found a list of tips over at reddit.
    Some good ones:

Waiting (Press T) will fill up your Magika/Health/Stamina bar instantly

Every major city stables has a wagon which you can use to fastravel to other cities you've never been to

You can hotkey your favorite items by opening the favorite menu (Q), highlighting the item and click 1-8 buttons on your keyboard (Good to see that!)

When you increase your stamina you also increase your maximum carry capacity by 5

Yea. The full saturation mod is over the top though, but the lower saturation is 100% perfect.

Lvl 18 now. More gripes -:
    - action kills animations are out of sync and suck real bad , they worked so well in FO3 - what happened ?
    - environment is mostly non-destructible
    - weapon like axes/sword have never really pierce the target, they just strike them like hammers (very evident in action kills). that is some sloppiness .
    - magic skills cause just a false 'fire' to burn on the target which goes out - clearly the weapon animations/graphic effects are still in the Oblivion age.
    - AI is erratic and stupid - i cannot say this enough. New case - if while fighting a bunch of enemies you hit one of the guards, everyone around you will straight away take an enemy stance - really irritating (happened in the Winterhold magic anomaly fight)

I guess they spent too much time developing the world and everything else is a hastejob or a pastejob from Oblivion. But "the World" is magnificent.

PS: I agree the UI is overly simplified in some cases - like the apparel section. But I think once you get comfortable using the 'Favorites' menu it isnt such a big deal - I keep most of my spells,a bow,a sword,a shield and all health/magicka potions there, and I almost never need to access the main inventory.

Fallout has blood, that is pretty much what happened. I was hoping Bethesda had looked more into this game in terms of combat animation:

I have a feeling their animations department is the one to blame, through out the game it's easily the aspect which has the lowest quality.
Especially the ore mining animation, he sure is careful when he is hitting the rock! ^^

This is what I have started to lean more heavily on, cause the world is pretty damn amazing, it's so detailed and diverse.

Agree with most of your points, other then destruction of environment. They said earlier on that this wouldn't be the case (probably since there old engine can't support something like that). Level 26 myself now, fairly easy to get some levels just doing enchanting and smithing.

I have really been enjoying cooking (love how character stirs the pot then taps the side with the spoon- makes me hungry everytime ), smithing is fun and enjoyable and you can definately improve items slightly beyond what is generally available in the game world for your given level, enchanting is cool too but even at enchanting lvl40 I still dont create very powerful enchantments.

Unfortunately, leveling is a bit TOO easy thru these crafting processes. In addition, I try to keep 2-handed, 1-handed, light and heavy armors all moving up... My character is lvl20 and I have only just talked to the greybeards for the first time (30 some hours of gameplay). The game world scales to your level so even random encounters can be very dangerous and difficult. I feel like I'm a little behind the curve at this point.

One small tip for smithing/enchanting-- be sure to improve whatever item you are wanting to make at the smith bench first THEN enchant it. Going the other direction only works after the smith magical items perk which you need to have 50 skill in. I made this mistake on a couple items and was kicking myself afterwards.

Here is an interesting read on the events in TES universe in the interregnum between Oblivion and Skyrim (which you can also gather by reading all those books )
Given such a rich setting I am amazed why the game doesnt reflect this storyline. Lets hope it does before I'm done.

Really enjoyed the game so far. Just reached level 31 with shy of 30hours playtime and I only just finished everything in Whiterun ( to my knowledge ) Got smithing to 100 so getting ready to make a fullset of dragonscale light armor Currently using full epic glass with epic elven on my companion.

Some pretty fun quests so far.

Running this atm, the low saturation version. Looks great for the most part, but far from perfect. Shadow detail and darker areas are often completely crushed. And colors are often too strong.

This is why I am running the game with almost the lowest brightness setting, this solves most of illumination problems, color as well. Did exactly the same in Oblivion.

I have to agree that the switching between weapons and spells really takes away from the immersion. A fight goes like this.

*cast destruction* pause, select shield and mace *chop chop* pause, select healing on both hands *heal* pause, select shield and mace

On the other hand it's nice that they made destruction spells strong from the beginning. It's actually a good alternative to chopping your way through the first 10 or so levels. I understand why they want you to choose between either of the two ways of attacking, but so far I am forced to use both in the more difficult fights.

You haven't understood how to use the quick menu :S

Favorite the weapon and spell. Go out of the item menu and press Q, assign hot key to items you want (1-8). This works decently, so you don't need to pause when you are going to change your weapon.
