TSMC 28nm Technology in Volume Production

Hsinchu, Taiwan – October 24, 2011 –TSMC (TWSE: 2330, NYSE: TSM) today announced that its 28nm process is in volume production and production wafers have been shipped to customers. TSMC leads the foundry segment to achieve volume production at 28nm node.
TSMC’s 28nm process offering includes 28nm High Performance (28HP), 28nm High Performance Low Power (28HPL), 28nm Low Power (28LP), and 28nm High Performance Mobile Computing (28HPM). Among these technology offerings, 28HP, 28HPL and 28LP are all in volume production and 28HPM will be ready for production by the end of this year. The production-version design collateral of 28HPM has been distributed to most mobile computing customers for their product-design use.

The number of customer 28nm production tape outs has more than doubled as compared with that of 40nm. At 28nm, there are currently more than 80 customer product tape-outs. The TSMC 28nm process has surpassed the previous generation’s production ramps and product yield at the same point in time due to closer and earlier collaboration with customers. TSMC’s 28nm design ecosystem is available through its Open Innovation Platform®, with qualified EDA design tools and third-party IP ready for customer designs.

The good news is that the yield is suprisingly good, better than 40nm was at that point. So looks like AMD will be launching the first 28nm probably very early 2012, doubt they can get them rushed before xmas holiday but who knows. I'm very excitingly looking forward to 28nm GPUs, quite a step from 40nm.

"Generally speaking, CMOS power consumption is the result of charging and discharging gate capacitors. The charge required to fully charge the gate grows with the voltage; charge times frequency is current. Voltage times current is power. So, as you raise the voltage, the current consumption grows linearly, and the power consumption quadratically, at a fixed frequency. Once you reach the frequency limit of the chip without raising the voltage, further frequency increases are normally proportional to voltage. In other words, once you have to start raising the voltage, power consumption tends to rise with the cube of frequency."

Would love to hear your theory on how TSMC's 28nm ramp will lead to a fall in nVidia's stock price.

because if AMD is the main gpu seller of new tech for the next few months, then nvidia would loose market share.

Shared between Apple, nVidia, AMD and the countless other companies who use TSMC and have 28nm designs ready to get some products or test chips from.

People shouldn't get their hopes up about GPU's this side of January.

I don't see why couldn't people get their hands on the pipecleaners soon...
Performance, now that will come, after the chinese new year. :-/ Looking forward to some cool running cards, sold my 580 and got a 480 in anticipation for these, really hope TSMC did not mess it up totally and have to wait for glofo to join in.

I wonder what this will do for the midrange/performance markets. It would be really nice to get 6970 performance without heat issues for $150 or less

its off topic, but amd launches a product 1st then, oh no amd is winning sell off NV hurry, then NV says look we have nothing now but we will have something eventually and the stock price goes back.

You usually don't count test wafers/shuttles as mass production wafers...

A few months of low volume 28nm production will not move the market. nVidia's stock price is tied to more important things - the global economy, their financial results etc. If their supplier (TSMC) successfully brings new tech to market it will have a positive effect on their financial prospects, quite the opposite of what you guys predict.

More to the point, and more important is Tegra(ARM core processor) to NVDAs prospects.
