Wink AMD Rushes Out Catalyst Rage Performance Driver

    Found this if anyone intrested!

AMD Rushes Out Catalyst Rage Performance Driver

AMD introduced a special BETA Catalyst driver for AMD Radeon graphics processors, that improves performance on the latest title from FPS pioneer id Software, Rage. Bluntly called the "Catalyst Rage Performance Driver", this driver has been rushed in by AMD to address performance issues. It provides "signifacant performance gains" for Rage in both single GPU and CrossFire configurations. The improvements are effective only on Radeon HD 5000 series and Radeon HD 6000 series graphics processors, and is available only for Windows 7.

Well, the game is in a sorry state at the moment anyway. We'll need a few patches to officially call it a release... The drivers at least fix the crash at startup, but not the crash at the exit of the first door... Seriously, it stutters, textures pop everywhere and are meh, character are bland at best, shooting is ok, ambiance is ok, story is... nonexistent or close to it. A big skip from me, and I was expecting this game a lot

    ****IMPORTANT****

The wrong Rage driver version was posted. Per my AMD contact it seems to have done more harm than good. A new version will be brought online very shortly. I will update when that happens. For now, avoid the beta driver!

Just how could they make that mistake ?

Seems anyone that buys Rage will now be actually getting what they bought in spades.

AMD's default OpenGl drivers blow. Seriously, every opengl source port that I've ever tried doesn't run anywhere near as well as it does with Nvidia hardware and its been like that for years. I have noticed this on Darkplaces, Qrack, eDuke32, and zDoom. It seems like any opengl title with out a profile just doesn't work properly. It really is something that AMD needs to work on.

Brink was a mess at launch too. AMD just isn't very good with OpenGL out of the box.

"Rushes out" is right. Members of the media quickly received a second email telling them NOT to use these drivers...

According to the reports on other forums, it performs very well and alleviates most of the problems. So should be recommended for all Rage players using AMD cards.

The link in the first post is fine. They replaced the file, its roughly 1 meg larger then the old one so you can physically tell the difference in what you get.

Is it just me or does it appear that modern hardware and drivers just seem to be playing an ephemeral to the problems caused by poorly written software?
Fast computers breed slow, lazy programmers
The price of reliability is the pursuit of the utmost simplicity. It is a price which the very rich find most hard to pay.

Modern Ram, makes an old overclocker miss BH-5 and the fun it was

Unfortunately. A lot of software devs seem to think that their job is just pushing their product out, and it's consumer's and/or hardware manufacturer's job to get it running with acceptable performance.

Nope, not just you. There has always been issues with newly released games not running perfectly on some hardware configs. Having software run perfectly on the multitude of PC configs out there is not easy. Especially if coding outside of API's. However, since consoles surpassed the PC as the largest gaming platform things have gotten much much worse. I don't know if games devs port to PC by running the console code through some conversion software/system or they manually port the code but whatever they do it *is* done very poorly.

What's more, software development today is easy compared to 10 or so years ago with all the tools that actually write the code whilst the developer drags and drops objects. I learned 'C' a long time ago the Kernighan and Ritchie way using Vi on a Xenix system. Today developers learn to code with an IDE or RAD environment that fills in the blanks and offers up suggestions and I think too many developers rely on this approach to turn out bloated software with functionality that isn't always required according to an employers time frame. Job vacancies for software testers have all but vanished in the UK over the past ten years too, perhaps this sheds some light on the quality of released code.

This is true to most fields of work. Nobody wants or can do a good job anymore. So all they do is "get the job done".
Notice any grammar or spelling mistakes? Feel free to correct me! Thanks
