bout time you got the 50mm Wevil.
wish i had known you were looking i would have sold you my 50mm 1.4
still will if you are interested in having a good lens.
but really if you are still using your rebel XT, the 50 1.8 has more than enough resolving power for 8-10mp

More backyard boredom this morning before work.
dont have photoshop here at work and i use a super uber crappy TN panel so i hope this looks ok.
i would have content aware'd out some stuff if i was home so forgive the crap in frame the makes this a poopy picture.

Maybe Im minority, but I think photos should be as they are taken. Sure, modify contrast, brightness, colors etc. but what makes photos is still same. When you start removing things from picture or adding it, then you can pretty much buy tablet and paint it.. Content aware fill isnt bad (used few times), but just for things like dust spots etc. Overusing some tool isnt usually good.. take a look on overdone HDR (which is pretty much every 9 from 10 HDRs) and you know what I mean.

So I like your photo even with "crap around". Nice frog btw.

the frog was the point of the picture, i just couldnt get the frame right because the other stuff was too close.
i could have moved the camera over but then the frog wasnt where i wanted it to be in frame.

normally i might TRY to remove the garbage from the right side of the frame, squirrel feeder, black rod and the gray thing on the bottom.
only because it detracts from the main subject, the frog.

you would be surprised how much crap i remove from some of my pictures.
mostly power lines but there have been some fairly large stuff, or alot of smaller stuff that i had to remove to get the shot that i wanted.... the way i envisioned it in my head.

i never manipulate the subject unless its a bug on a flower or something similar that i did not want there.
or maybe some pimples on someones face.

i only change the surroundings to remove stuff that makes the picture look bad.

Thanks a ton BeepBeep2, they are tons of fun to watch, very territorial. I setup the tripod about 20' away, zoom all the way in, get the frame I want, get all my settings the way I want, (very fast shutter speed as high as possible if you want to get the wings). Then I use a remote switch and sit in a chair next to the tripod, its a lot easier to see them coming if you don't have your face in the camera.

If all you want to do is shoot them sitting there, the above is not necessary, but action shots are far more interesting.

what mode did you use on the camera - exif says manual so i will assume M (manual) mode.
the viewfinder of the D90 should have told you it was under exposed.

that is heavily under exposed and colors are way off.
looks like you had the white balance set wrong and were using the wrong mode.

here is probably what it shoudl have looked like although i am guessing at the colors and white balance.

this is nothing more than auto contrast, auto color and auto tone with photoshop and about 140% unsharp mask at 0.3
if you dont have photoshop grab GIMP or Photoscape

your focal point looks like his butt also.

Here is the first shot out of my D5100...went out shooting tonight with the 55-300 f/4.5-5.6 VR and a tripod

Corrected about 2 full stops in GIMP 2.6.8. Otherwise untouched.
It isn't all that great, but after having the camera working only 30 minutes at the time, I am getting a hang of it. The lens is pretty sharp.


ISO 1600, f/6, 2.5s exposure. I was too lazy to expose it correctly, it didn't look so dark on the monitor...guess I oughta get used to that.

Its been a long time...I mean long time since I've felt good about photography. My old camera (POS Fuji S700) had been outgrown 2 years ago. I saved up, did research, got feedback and this was the result.
I shoot based on emotion...depending on how I felt that day, I may have shot something different even if I was in the same scenario. It is fun to revisit places and put new spins on things.

The last time I shot photography seriously with my S700 was in the summer of '09 when I was 13. (200 pages back in this thread) All my stuff since have focused on 35mm for Photo 1 at my school. It feels really good to be back

it was manual with auto wb and auto iso for some of the pics. it was quite darkoutside but i hated what the flash did to the image. and i was using a 300mm lens on an object like 3 feet from me

was that the built in flash? dont forget that if you have an SB-600/700/900 it can be a slave flash to your built in flash and you can experiment to make fill in light instead of only a huge bomb of light.

now what i said about a slave flash to your onboard may be wrong. my time with the D90 was short lived so i dont recall exactly how or if the slave flash feature worked.

here is a little trick to play around with if you dont have one of those flash diffusers for onboard flashes.

the 2nd is probably your best option because you get a warming and cooling screen plus its a small form factor.

take some kleenex, or toilet paper, or coffee filters (coffee filters offer the best white balance.) you can even use a piece of white copy machine paper.
cover the onboard flash (kleenex or toilet paper you might have to use two layers. but not thick you still want light to easily travel through it.
this will "diffuse" the flash so its not a huge beam of light on the subject.
you dont WRAP the flash with it so to speak... i guess i meant to say hold it up in front of the flash maybe an inch or so away from it.

it is sharp for the lens you used and it looks like the 2 full stops you corrected it with did the trick.

dont get used to soft shots, understand the camera and settings and many times, the abilities of the lens you have and you can get some great shots.
and also proper sharpening techniques with photoshop.

you did good man its a neat picture. and you did it justice by making it black and white!

no idea. its just a popup flash. anytime the D90 doesnt like the lighting it will popup the flash unless its in manual with it specifically off. only got it few weeks ago. i have a Nikon AF-S 18-70mm lens 1:3.5-4.5G DX ED and a tamron AF 70-300 1:4-5.6 LD tele-macro(1:2) lens

dont treat it like a point and shoot bro.
take it off auto mode and use AV mode,, maybe called A mode on the D90 i forget. that will let you control the fstop and the camera controls the shutter speed.

the flash wont popup in those modes if i recall but there may be a setting in the camera to prevent it. i just cant remember.
