I hate to come into this fantastic thread looking like a complete moron with this dumb post, but anyway here goes;
What do you guys think are safe clocks/voltage for this card on air (stock Twin Frozr III) 24/7? Also, is there any reason to OCP mod on air? Right now I'm running it @ 952 core/+143mv, mem @ 2250 all via Afterburner. Seems to be ok but I wonder if I'm not pushing it hard enough...
Motherboard: ASRock P67 Extreme6 (UEFI v1.60) | CPU: Core i5-2500K @ 4.5GHz (1.36v) w/ Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme | RAM: 2x2GB DDR3-2133 (G.Skill F3-17000CL9D-4GBXL) | PSU: XFX Black Edition 750W | Graphics: MSI N580GTX Lightning | Sound: Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty (PCI) | Storage: 2x250GB Seagate 7200rpm HDD 3gb/s SATA | OS: Windows 7 SP1 64-Bit | Case: Antec 900
I'd try to get to 1GHz, although what you have is already pretty decent. Voltages wouldn't bother me as long as you don't hard-mod and temps are in check...
Today is as hot as it gets here in New England, USA; max core reached 80C under 99% load (53C memory, 56C vrm). Should I be concerned about OCP at this level (up to +200mv) or not?

No, OCP isn't needed unless you're running LN2.
Those cards need oven treatment, I think![]()

Try 1 hour at 290~300°F
170°F will help you get rid of condensation, but won't restore broken soldering.

Or let the card rest for 2-3 days at room temp. Most of the times it worked for me

Did anybody test the XE version?
There is Hynix VRAM on it like on the SOC cards and hopefully there is no CB/CBB.
Our card arrived yesterday... but no time to test it under LN2 in the next days

well the oven trick didn't work, guess I'll let them sit for a while.![]()
Hi to all, I'm waiting LN2 and so I decided to play with my lightning. Put on an old Vga supreme on the chip, stock cooler was already in the box, and tried. Gpu reach 990mhz with 3dmark 2005, but I have a lot of problem with memory. At default voltages max 2200/2250 Mhz. Increasing volt with afterburner the max reached was 2300, also with +100mv (1.74v on load). At 2400 artifact and freeze immediatly, on desktop, also with 3dmark2005 bench applet open and so already switched in 3d mode. Someone have noticed something similar, or can halp me to understand ? thnx in advance
at least they are still working. i took the lid off one of mine and it worked for the first session and then a week later when i tried again > GPU dead lol
strange that they dropped so much, my card did about 25mhz more delidded but still nothing i was expecting really
Hynix ICs like cold loopy and will probably bench another 50Mhz higher than air clocks but nothing amazing though, they dont really scale with volts
I think you have a problem with contact now that the IHS is gone. Use less armaflex or whatever you use for insulation...
All my GTX580 are without IHS and I benched 3D Mark 2011 at MOA ~1450MHz with 1.48v without any problem. Smoke and slamms did the same also without IHS... so I don't think there's a problem with IHS-less cards
P.S: After IHS removal, it's very important to put some nail polish or vaseline on the little SMDs that are near the core. Otherwise, when you will have some water there the GPU will DIE instantly

I just believe that its only a matter of time(2~3 sessions)until a 580 dies when overclocked with high voltages and/or very low temperatures.
Now I will try another CUII witch I haven't stressed it yet(only cascade tests with and without heat spreader)and see if it will last longer when stressed without heatspreader.
It probably has nothing to do with HS removal. As I wrote in DCUII thread, same thing happened to my friend's junior-21 card. The card had cb @-170 and run fine unigine for two sessions @1490Mhz with 1.56 vcore. The third time we tried to overclock it suddenly could only run @ 1300Mhz and the cb was gone without touching the HS.I thought something was wrong with the TIM under the HS so I removed it and tried again but nothing changed. Also strange is that I just tested it on cascade and it has lost only 10Mhz in cascade conditions(1250Mhz before-1240Mhz after/1.35vgpu@-90).
Only thing I can think of is that some contacts underneath core have problem.
