This is pretty much what Saaya and XSAlliN pointed. This new naming scheme is just a marketing move to fish the average unsavvy people that gets interested in a product when it has a noticeable change in its numbering.
We have to "thank" Google Chrome for that indeed.

Don't get me wrong. I'm all for this new pace in development, releasing more often with an smaller amount of additions and changes.
What I'm against is that they are bumping the mayor version in each of those. It completely devalues the meaning of having a new mayor version.
FireFox has been out since 2004 and is only on version 4, Chrome came out very recently and is already on version 11, making it undeniably superior.

Hope they realize why people are leaving for chrome. It's not just about version numbers, user interface or some bench result. It's how it works when heavily loaded. If you have a few windows with lots of tabs it gets a bit unresponsive and slow. When writing this there is a few seconds input lag here and there. And that's on a quadcore which isn't loaded much at all. Annoying when you aren't seeing what you are writing.

I moved from IE to Netscape to Opera then Firefox and now Chrome. My favourite browser is probably firefox but i stick with Chrome because it is simply faster and less resource hungry

huh? at any given moment i have 6-7 FF windows up with +-50tabs all togheter and i get no such things. With my usage chrome doesnt cut it. I have to restart chrome every few days or else chrome would eat ALL my memory.
Something is going on with your machine....

As i se it chrome is nice for lighter normal usage, beeing closed every day.
