It was not a single cherrypicked benchmark. The statement was a server statement, not a desktop statement. At launch there were several benchmarks that were 40%+ greater for Barcelona.

The second half of your statement is correct. The interwebs grabbed that statement and made it a generic barcelona vs. Intel statement just as I have seen people misusing the "50% greater throughput" statement about Interlagos.
