just turn cpu fan monitoring off

or the in case of error f1 off

I seem to be having a random problem with my Overclock

Cold BOOTs give me a System Service Exception BSOD or an iastore.sys BSOD.
Providing I do no cold boot the system is entirely stable for more than a day. and in this time I can play games, Linx, 3dmark loops, etc without a hitch.
    Any ideas?

Hi, I need to bump this thread up.
Today I got a new REX and a new pentium cpu, it seems this board won't allow me to overclock a 200fsb cpu.
It can boot with all settings set to auto but if I change a single thing it won't boot.

    random bios overvolt?

hi fellas, definately been playing with this board for a few years now but recently Ive noticed some strange behaviour.

at absolutely random intervals on startup (thankfully fairly long intervals) the board overvolts CPU voltage DRAM voltage northbridge and southbridge voltages almost as far as they will go, no joke (settings are changed in bios). lights on the motherboard go red and windows boots but bluecreens on startup.

Im pretty happy about this because Im worried that it will burn my hardware out very fast. For example not exact but CPU volts go up to 2v dram 2.5v northbridge as high as it will go same with southbridge.

It only changes back when I reset settings.

Is this a bios virus that makes the hardware try to kill itself or what?

maybe its the boards way of trying to tell you to buy new hardware...

has anyone else got the same problem?

friend of mine had that issue LONG ago on an old athlon therough bread system. he was playing starcraft over battlenet and someone got bent about my friend winning the round and the guy some how sent him a bug that did something almost exactly the same. though it wasn't in intervals, it effected him immediatly and constantly on every boot up to a point where he would have to redo his bios settings every time he turned on his system.

so you're not entirely wrong by thinking it's a virus, it very well could be... all the virus needs is access to your PLL clock gen, of which if you use anything higher than basic windows then it does have access to it. but it also could be a bios issue or a degrading circuit somewhere also...

yeah in the end I thought it wouldnt be the exact same changes every time unless it was programmed in there some how... anyway Im not pretending to know why it happens.

Its not like this just started happening recently its been going on for about the last 6 months. I wanted to make sure it was a real problem before I posted it.

Ive tried changing bioses though and it doesnt seem to fix it. Anyway its not critical, just a problem im trying to fix, checkin if someone else has the same issues?

I am not too sure how true it is, but I have heard that some 4GB modules work on this board, meaning that you can have 8GB from only 2 DIMMs!
    Can anyone confirm this?

I am thinking of replacing my RAM as I am not 100% sure, but I think it is becoming defective as CAS7 is no longer stable... not even @ 1333Mhz when these sticks are rated for CL7 @ 1600Mhz!

    Awesome zsamz
If you do manage to pop 8GB of that onto the Rampage Extreme please do post your results (even if you cannot POST ) :p
    Thanks

@ rotamonkey - I have heard of this happening with the REX, try reflashing the BIOS to the latest version. Flash the BIOS while at stock settings.

Thanks have reflashed bios multiple times but might have overlooked returning settings to stock, bit of an issue because with my setup the board doesnt like to post on stock settings (ram issues i think), but maybe thats why ive got the problem and noone else does.

definately looking forward to seeing if the 4gb sticks are compatible!! 8 gb would rock.

Yeah the memory compatibility on this board can be fussy (as with all ASUS 775 x38/48 boards).
I must admit I am also relishing to see what zsamz results are!
4GB modules would rock the socks off as having all 4 DIMM's populated does seem to significantly limit OC'ing (as I have found out by using all 4-DIMMS) and brings unforeseen results.

i will get to it soon with an e8500
i will pop in a q9550 also to see how thats gonna do i know for a fact that a quad+2x2=

but i think you dreamin if you thinkin of clockin with 4x4 unless the rex loves the newer psc chips
but you gonna need some serious juice on the nb

i have to get to it before i get my p67-ud7 n 2500k lol

john with 2x4gb max speed is 1800-1850mhz cas8
with 2x4+2x2=12gb max speed is 1760-1800mhz
    the 2x2 set is gskills 2200 cas7

    cpu was e8500

its cool havin 12gb on x48

if you buy 2x4 get the 1600mhz 6-8-6 stuff

takes forever to memtest so i only did a few passes of test 5 since it was on test 5 that i was getting errors with 2x4

memory top speed gonna be 1600-1700mhz with a quad

i'm not puttin in the q9550 cause i have to redo loop to put it in
i have a gigabut p45 for the quad

    Thanks for the test zsamz
Are you able to provide a CPU-Z shot?
What volts are you pumping into the RAM and the NB for 1600Mhz speeds?
Would there be a particular brand of RAM which you would suggest for a decent 8GB 1600Mhz Kit?
    Thanks again.

i was pumpin 1.65 into nb 1.7 into ram
i shoulda set ram to 1.66 or less cause i think these chips dont like the juice

i like gskills cause they dont bin as tight as the others

    its 1.5v stuff

mine cant do cas7 and they 2000mhz kit

    more juice has no effect
    but its stable with 1.6v

thats awesome that they work, definately want to give this a go but wasnt your NB frying at 1.65? was this just a quick test setting or couldnt you get it runnin any lower than that? mine seems hot with water cooling on the NB at just over 1.5v...

Im probably a bit nervous about that because the NB on my last x48 board had a meltdown at just over 1.5v but no WC on that setup.

i have a block that i moded for the nb
its a swiftech that a soldered a plate of copper cause i needed different holes
i have enzotech copper heatsinks on my pwm also
puttin a nb block on the POS heatpipe
my nb hit 36c on load

all my x48 boards either got a better nb heatsink or watercooled
    even 1.7v dont scare me
with stock cooler n 1.4v it got too hot for my taste

heh heh nice one, gotta love that type of moddin. Ive gotta do the same to mine or at least reseat the stock heatpipe setup, I heard thats good for about 10 degrees cooler temps. my nb's on 1.53v and at load im gettin 53 degrees and worse on hot days.

got plenty of AS5 and thermal tape around might be time for a project...

I was going to say that those NB volts are very high!
Ideally I would not want to go over 1.45V
My NB seems to run quite hot with 4x2 DIMMS and I was hoping that perhaps 2x4 DIMM's might cool it somewhat.

Thank you once again for your informative test results zsamz
The only issue is I can only seem to find the Ultra Low Voltage 1.35V edition of that RAM in the UK
Seems we have lots of Corsair and G-Skill Rip Jaws, but snipers are rare and the snipers we do have are 1.35V
