Just for interest sake - I got E5620 working on Gigabyte X58A-UD3R rev.2.0 with beta bios from Stasio - FF2 . Beta bioses here .

I don't know if it made a difference - but I flashed bios w i7 950 , went into the bios and manually set multi to 18x and set QPI , uncore and dram ratios as low as possible .

Got the E 5620 at 211 x 19 - seems stable - must still stress properly , also managed 225 x 19 , not stable though . I struggled for 2 weeks getting setup going as I had no compatible chip to flash bios with . Was on the verge of going out and buying i7 950 .

This thread has been a great help as far as voltage tweaking goes - thanks peeps !

Ok - so I've stability tested system for about 1/2 an hour running Prime95 64-bit and Furmark stability test similtaneously - I reckoned that this way I could get temps up inside the box .

The cpu voltage you can see in eazytune is incorrect , other voltages are as set in BIOS . I first tried this CPU with H70 - temps were through the roof - I tried mounting the damned thing in different ways and then opted for Zalman cnps10 flex with 1200 rpm Coolermaster generic blue led fan attatched in closed HAF 912 Advanced . Temps are waaaaaayy lower . I'm selling the H70 - needless to say .

Here's a screen shot of 211 x 19 - will try 221 shortly . .... Oh ..... and bios version is FF2 for rev.2.0 mobo

The Xeon E5620 is an interesting CPU. RealTemp is designed to order the cores into their correct physical order. Based on what it is showing, I'm pretty sure that under the IHS is a 6 core / 12 thread CPU that has had the center two cores disabled.

The 6 core CPUs are arranged as 2 rows of 3 cores each like this.

It looks like Intel has disabled the two center cores so now it looks like this.

X - X

The good news is that the space between cores probably helps a little with cooling and overclocking. The only bad news would be if Intel had to disable one of the center cores because it was defective. If you're hitting over 4.0 GHz with a 19 multi, I guess there's not too much to complain about.

Thanks uncleweb !! I was wondering if 2 disabled cores may be the case - makes sense . And thanks for RealTemp .

I haven't managed to get 221 x 19 stable yet but will keep trying . Lower QPI bus multi may help as I'm heading onto 3800 mhz . I wonder if that's possible ? Is it a bios or hardware thing ?

qpi is good till 4.4ghz after that would set qpi to slow mode in bios.i think it drops from 36x to 32x

Cool - I'll give the " slow mode " setting a try - I never tried it because when I set it inthe bios it gave me a reading of 99 mhz ( in the bios again ) . Will try right now . Thanks acebmxer .

When I set " slow mode " in BIOS it results in a frequency of 5000 Mhz ( more or less ) when viewing QPI link speed in the bios . In cpuz it reads 3600 mhz , whatever the case may be , it's still unstable . Will try again later .


OK - this is later Seems to be stable for 1/2 hour prime95 . Voltages are as indicated in Easytune . The ICH core voltage ( which you can't see ) is set to 1.16v . Temps were higher when I started test , then I lowered cpu core voltage from 1.47 to 1.39v , with Prime95 still running in the background . I'm suprised that didn't cause any errors . {rime95 still running in the background while I'm typing this .

QPI/Vtt Voltage may be dangerously high for 24/7 use ( thoughts ? ) , temps are also pretty high - maybe with a decent custom loop it could operate below 70 degrees celsius .

Finished building and overclocking my friend's new computer this weekend.
this is on a Gigabyte X58A-UD3R
Was able to get a 960 stable @ 4.18 with a H50 corsair cooler. not to shabby eh?

I'm sure you've still got a lot of tweaking to do, and I reckon you could at least drop the PLL from 1.8 to something lower. I was tempted by a 940+ but I've not seen much improvement over the 920 for everyday stable o/c but I could be wrong!

I could but our problem now is CPU temps. I believe the H50 is capped out.

That's a shame. Lowering the pll can drop your CPU a degree or two if you're lucky, might be worth a try.

Hello everybody.
I want to achieve a 20X167+Turbo on+HT on, with a d0,
an a ex58-ud3r(not the x58a)
and three sticks of 1333 memory.
For the moment it seems that i am stable with changing only vcore(1,175v) and qpi/vtt(1,295v).
Now i want to start decreasing the two voltage values(especially qpi/vtt), and i want to ask you if the one is related with the other.
If for example i drop qpi/vtt, is it possible that i will need more vcore ?
or
if i drop vcore i may need an icrement in qpi/vtt voltage ?
Sorry if my question seems noobish, but i am a bit confused.
I also want to know if i must stick to the uncore rule(memory multiX2) ?
My system is stable with uncore set to auto, that gives me an uncore of 3340Mhz.
If i put the uncore X16(8 memory multi X2), i have an uncore of 2672Mhz.
I can't find a reason to low my uncore as the system is stable, but i am in doubt cause every o/c guide i read it starts like this :
'always set your uncore ratio at the double of your memory multi'
