Heh, I still play Quake like that. High details and resolution make just as much sense for fast FPS games as a console controller.

Quake should look like this at max

But it can look like this...

Sadly everything seems to be going in the rage of "graphics, graphics, graphics, must look better than crysis" and requiring uber hardware to make it look like that. Which is probably the most detrimental thing for PC gaming, if I really feel like going for audio visual immersion I'll watch a blu-ray and call it a day.

Plus I can still play quake 3 on el-cheapo laptop, and since those are all the rage so can everybody

If you are comparing a crt that is limited to 60hz then yes the flickering issue will be a problem. However if you have a CRT that can do 85hz on up at any res then you wont have to worry about the flickering issue unless perhaps your eyes are extremely sensitive. I'm sensitive to the brightness a LCD puts off. I have to lower the brightness just so it doesn't hurt my eyes.

Pixel diffusion on a CRT with an Aperture Grill is quite noticeable however 'Good' CRT's use a Shadow Mask grill which has an extremely small amount of bleeding at high res to the point where it's unnoticeable. Also the fact that a Shadow grill will lessen the black surrounding each dot.

    http://www.infocellar.com/television/crt.htm

"Since the beams need a little bit of space after they pass through the mask (in order to disperse outward) a slight amount of diffusion occurs. This is actually good, since it lessens the amount of black space between dots (shadow mask) or slots (aperture grill)."

The only way I can see anyone noticing any bleeding with a Shadow Mask Grille on a CRT at high res would be on a still image and even then it is more likely a physiological effect in their head. I can see someone noticing the blurr on the CRT providing a LCD was 'next' to the CRT while comparing them both. However if there is no LCD present to compare then I can't see anyone saying that my CRT has any blurry look to it at high res.

    http://www.infocellar.com/hardware/m...blue-dots1.jpg

You don't see any bleeding in that pic. The dots are essentially on top of each other.

You can get a config file off say ESReality or some of the Quake live sites and run with that.

Basic information if you want to muck about it with it on your own.

    http://www.holysh1t.net/how-to-custo...e-live-config/

Two config generators if you want to do it the easy way

    http://www.holysh1t.net/quake-live-config-generator/

    http://www.quakeliveconfig.com/

    Should be good to go.

I disagree, personally... a blu-ray is not interactive , a videogame is. As far as graphics, a game like BFBC2 uses the atmospheric effects & weather effects to affect gameplay such as gusts of dust, etc. that obscure visibility. I go back to play my NES when I want pure, simple graphics... the rest of the time I play on my modern PC .

In specific shooters like those mentioned above ....even with 30 inch monitor (once capable of 120 Hz) at a resolution of 2560 x 1600 - you'll still get owned shamefully (64 - 3 or something like that) by a mediocre player with a 17 inch CRT and 640 x 480.
I won't play games that are vert- like that... CS:S does have a proper FOV setting from what I recall though, making it hor+ which is proper. Widescreen should give same vertical view and wider/more on the sides, when set up properly. Most games nowadays handle it correctly but there are examples of those that don't still, which don't see my dollars .

How 'bout a 120Hz 3D DLP projector that works with both AMD and Nvidia?

    Acer H5360
Play games in 3D with AMD4xxx or newer + Iz3D 120Hz driver and Viewsonic DLP glasses.
    Play games with Nvidia 3D kit + Nvidia ??? card + W7
Watch 3D Blu-rays with Cyberlink PDVD10 Ultra 3D - 120Hz setting using AMD 5xxx card + DLP glasses or Nvidia kit + Nvidia card.

The projector was on sale for $480usd last month. Had mine about 4 weeks and made a quicky screen from Black Out Cloth (it's white) for $5 at fabric store. Used 1 of their cardboard tubes to make it roll up.
Up to 300" screen ha ha. 60-80 " should be enough.

Well this is a matter of taste, so here is my deal on gaming/graphics.

There is a reason I still play the first 3 Quakes, the first there UT iterations and the first Tribes... those are the games I like. I personally hate physics, weather, and all that other junk. I think it's OK for single player games, but it's crap for multiplayer games where I want pure skill based. I could tell Quake 4, Doom 3, and Unreal 3 were going to suck. The graphics were too good for them to be a quality fast paced shooter, lighting effects, mist/steam on levels, weather, sand storms... And I find it rather insulting that companies try to sell me multi GPU, now physX cards, and multiple monitors to make some sort of immersion center that completely takes the speed and skill out of the game.

I predicted Quake 4 being disaster. All it took was one look at "dynamic light, volumetric fog, etc" all the things that make games suck and the amazing graphics it had to realize "this game is going to play like ass", and it did! And the results were easy to predict. Hardcore gamers threw up in their mouths a bit and then picmip'd the hell out of it, the main target demographic (college age kids) couldn't run it properly and thus pirated it or didn't buy it it all, and the e-peen crowd SLI'd it and then complained when they got served by the picmip crew who didn't have to deal with all that visual clutter, que disaster/bad sales/failed game.

If I want to play a multi player game on the internet, well there are some great fighting games out for consoles (and that's where they belong outside of the arcades) and the old Quakes are still there, I'm not going to play what came out on the PC lately, well Blood Bowl is good... If I want to actually play a game, it's going to be on one of myriad of consoles I have or the various arcade boards I have ready to go. If I want to show off what my computer can do I'll stop folding and run a Demo or benchmark on one of the SLI rigs.

But I'd far rather blow 2 hours watching a blu-ray than having to slug it through some game that fully taxes my hardware. I get far more immersion that way. After all, if it's actually taxing it, the entire point is visuals anyways so it's ceased being a game. Which is why I'm not shocked most people I know hung up their mice around the Doom 3, UT 3 time and laugh off where the hardware is going now, and... moved to consoles and bought a blu-ray player.

    Long live Quake 3!

Why do you want to play like this? I guarantee you I can give you a run for your money on any modern FPS, including TF2 / dystopia (which is not mainstream at all but a good exhibit of 'pro' style FPS). Quake is simply a bunny hopping fest and I don't have much fun with that at all. Even Thresh says:

So if you had the chance to produce a competitive game, what features would your perfect game include (e.g. Double jumps, QW style bunny hopping, fast weapon switching)?
How about what it wouldn’t include? I really don’t like bunny hopping – in some ways I think it lessens the importance of strategy and prediction b/c with everyone hopping around everywhere, you almost always know where they are.
What's wrong with enjoying some eye candy and having competition?

This. Nothing says gameplay and graphics can't be in the same game .

@Crash5s: Some people (including me) might say that using the terrain and weather to your advantage in a game, is skill/tactics ... just as much as setting up a good ambush or aiming your weapon properly.

The thing that I HATE about BFBC2 is the graphics. When you're playing mulitplayer on a snow level and can't see your enemy so you continue panning and as you look away the snow blows away and he kills you. I want a game about prediction and deadly mouse skills, not luck of the wind

I agree. All the skill went out of computer games when Doom 3 and others hit. Volumetric lighting, fog.... . Hence why I play modern games of skill on consoles, Street Fighter, Blaz Blue, and soon MVC3. Oh wait, let's introduce clouds and fog into those as well. Because having that stuff will make it more real... oh wait those developers are actually game devs and not hacks who should be working for pixar rather than making games.

If you are going to add stuff to suck the skill out of an FPS, you might as well play with a controller to make it "harder" and add more to it.

But again, don't get me wrong. Those sort of things are fine in single player games that don't depend on hand eye coordination, and aren't played against others. But if I wanted to do that, well, blu-ray is more impressive.

The same reason others hate Camper™ FPS. I don't play any modern warfare kind of game online but I love fast paced scifi shooters with unrealistic weaponry, especially UT series. Just because you can't bunnyhop doesn't mean you have to camp, TF2 is the most brilliant example of this. It's probably the only good modern FPS released in the past few years.

I played UT3 when it had a free weekend. Ignoring the absolutely terrible net code (I have on idea how they managed to get their engine into so many games) it sometimes pays to hold chokepoints instead of just running around.

There's a fine balance between having so little health that it's better to stay in one spot and having so much health / respawns that are too quick that encourage you to run around suicidally.

UT3 is a bad game, you can tell just by looking at the GFX, good graphics always turn into "horrible game that takes no skill".

If you want to play a good Unreal Tournament, play some UT99 CTF, or some UT 2004 1v1 or TDM. Screw that graphics whore bull that was UT3 that only serves to help sell multi GPU nonsense that ruined PC gaming.

Also "suicide" I don't think you know what you are talking about here. You need to time every weapon, armour, the DD, to the second and create a map lock so your opponent will NEVER, EVER be able to pick up a single item and then spawn rape the snot out of them. When you are being raped you need to figure out what item you have the best odds of stealing, take it, and then build up in reverse till you can risk a direct engagement to try and lock them. Death Match has never been about racking up killings or running about the map looking for people at anything above "utter noob" level.

And you don't have that much health, full bio, flak point blank, head shot, shock combo, other than your spawn weapons pretty much anything can kill you in one single hit. Or knock you about to get consecutive hits to waste your ass in under 4 seconds.

As for their engine, well... PC gaming is about graphics since directX 9.0c, not skill or game quality. Unreal 3 looked good, so it got into a lot of because all the PC crowd cares about is graphics, and sadly that nonsense is starting to infect consoles. PC gaming is ruining and dragging down the quality of console games because "rawr graphics, faster"... and it's sad.

I cannot agree with a blanket statement "good gfx leads to bad gameplay" that's bullcrap. Granted, there are definitely many games that they focused on the graphics, and let the gameplay slide, but it isn't a hard and fast rule.

....and how did this thread go from a monitor to game graphics and gameplay?
