Pros and Cons of going from 9800GX2 to 580GTX?

Yeah so I just found out, from my insider elf friend that Santa is supposed to be dropping off said VGA under the X-mas tree this year.

It has been 2-3 years since my last VGA upgrade.

I would like to WC it, and looking at blocks.

I am still running a 775 System, don't plan on upgrading any time soon as don't have the $$$.

So can others comment on their experiences so far and opinions?

A jump from 9800GX2 to a GTX 580 will be a massive performance boost, period.
    Even on a 775 system.

I can think of a con, albeit a pathetic one: You can no longer say you're running two GPUs

Con: your 9800GX2 isn't crunching (anymore).

Find another system with a beefy PSU & toss both the 9800GX2 & GTX580 up on GPUGRID! Just in time for the XS-GPUGRID Supercomputer week, too!

Think I could use the 9800 for PHysx?

Absolutely. But you better have a stout PSU to feed both of those cards. Although it would be overkill for physx.

Be prepared for a lot more heat in your case too.

well it would put quite a bit of heat into my loop.

Thinking about moving to a larger RAD then my TC 120.3 but not convinced yet.

I like the idea of the 140.3, especially if I get three SA 140s.

I have a HX620 now, and could default to a TTP 1200W if need be but need to dig into the newer PSUs for more info.

Come to think of it, wonder if I could set the 9800gx2 to fold/crunch, while still using the 580 for gaming etc.

Think the OS could handle it?

I've heard that if you have a GeForce 4xx or higher, if you want to have a separate card for PhysX it has to be at least a GTX260 as anything lower than that will be slower than leaving the GF4xx/5xx to do PhysX on its own

Did you test both the 9800gx2 & 250 out as Physx cards yet? Curious to know if what Oj said is correct.

Also, I don't see you on the GPUGRID team yet

yes it will handle it hehe, i still vouch for the 9800GX2 even the gtx to be one of the best physx cards ive used!

Another thing I find funny is AMD/Intel would snipe any of our Moms on a grocery run if it meant good quarterly results, and you are forever whining about what feser did?
