the marvell update does a few things including resetting bios settings, also updating its internal driver from what the site says that statio posted, go back into bios and change it from ide to ahci. Look under general system devices, where all the usb root hubs are.

Once I got all quirks sorted out I can conclude that this boards is pretty darn good! I got a healthy boost in clocks, from 4.2Ghz @1.30v on my MSI X58M to 4.42 @1.36v on the GA-X58A-UD5.

I do however have a very high NB temp, it idles at 78C. Anyone has the same temps or possible input of benefits of changing TIM?

timpin2 is my NB temp on my ud7 but I also use 140mm fans over the board to keep the air moving in the case since the ud7 Full cover WB does not fit the rev 2.0 board and i was not allowed to return the WB for a refund.

Did you check if the TIM was of good quality? I guess I'll have to remove it and see whats up, 78-80C is simply to high.

The stock TIM is crap (it was died out and no good out the box), I replaced it with Ceramique after I tried test fitting the The FC waterblock. The EK WB does not fit the mosfets. The rev 2.0 board is narrower on the lower mosfet and longer on the top.

Alright, gotta pop it out and replace then. Maybe put a low rev tinyfan as well.

I customer air cool the NB temps are very good, just put a fan on it, after replacing tim, thats WAYYYY to high. I also get the same results switching to this board from p6x58d-premium, its just a better board, for its price is SO hard to beat. I think it has a lot to do with build and component quality is much higher than ASUS and EVGA. ]]

Did put a 120mm fan for the time beeing, lowered temps 20C right of the bat. It will have to do until time allows for a more sofisticated solution.

As for the review, I simply ignore any review in terms of OC capability if no max BCKL is tested. A max OC based on a raised multiplier gives no useful information. Perhaps if comparing to other boards with the same CPU, but that I havent seen yet.

The nb TIM on my UD7 was rock hard and nasty. I replaced it and the mosfet's heat tape with some shin etsu. I didn't mess with the sb or other chip. My MCH temp, which was decent at 37c, dropped to 33c. I did tighten the 2 nb screws all the way down.

If you are at 78, that is way to high! Something isn't making contact very well.

LOL! I live in S. Texas - it just dropped to less than 100F outside about 2 weeks a go...

I don't have a rad or a fan.

Yeah our system may be different but it helps it seeing what other peoples system is doing. I had trouble posting my system past 161 bclock on the 25 multi till I changed the ram sub timings. If you notice we are also using different qpi and uncore. Why do you have the pci-e clock drive up so high? Another thing when it comes to bclock for me I can post at 185 if I disable the stata 3 ports in the bios. One thing I notice is your auto subtimings are different from the what cpu tweaker lists, maybe you could trying tightening those in the bios for even more performance? Have you tried doing a 32M superpi? I'm curious as to high fast your setup can do it.

The value I have in brackets beside the auto in the mem subtimings are the ones that the board uses when it is in Turbo and Extreme mode. The board is operating in "standard" mode and the "auto" setting is creating the timings that you see in cpu tweaker - they just don't show up in the bios.

I suppose I could tweak the sub timings some more, but I still haven't finished with some of the other settings.


With my daily driver setting of 4.5Ghz.


And yes, I am using the 10.2.6.015 binaries in Linx.

My understanding is to leave the pci-e clock drive alone unless your raising the speed beyond 100 and or using more than one gpu in the system.
If I were you I would read this about the way gulftown works. You do not need 2x uncore for gulftown only 1.5x. I used 2.x for gulftown myself. The thing that is scary to me it the amount of VTT you are using, personally I would not go up to 1.51. Some claim you can go that high with out problems. It takes a month or more before any problems occur.


The biggest reason I ask about 32M superpi is I run into problems it the past where I could run any stress test I could think of my superpi 32M would fail and I would get data corruption of some images I would download, so part of My testing for a good 24/7 OC is using superpi 32M along with doing at minimum 4 hours of Linpack.

@Ryouko, its a great board, I don't think they are going to drop it in price too much, what i would do is check if newegg has price assurance, if the price drops they refund you, also if you have a microcenter next to you, they will price match.
@mlee49, its just such a terrible review, i can't believe the quality of reviews these days, such as the one at hardwareheaven that says the asrock x5 extreme 6 is better than the ud9, which was the top of the x58 round up. So asrock makes the best boards. peroid, even up against the high binned IOH on the UD9(asus doesnt even bin their IOH).

Thank you, I think I'll get it and hope for a good i7 cpu and ddr3 memory on black friday. I keep thinking I can wait till sandybridge, but I think the opening prices for that will be too much for me to even think about buying, and the prices of the i7 stuff won't go any further down. (Until next black friday 2011 I'm assuming)

Unfortunately Newegg doesn't seem to have price assurance, but I hope that the price from $274.99 to $232.47 (including their rebate) is a good buy. Going to chance it!

Edit: Now that I did buy it I am feeling buyers remorse. Argh. And now have to wait painfully for a good cpu and memory price.

One question on this board though, can this board regulate the cpu fan if it has only three pins? I have a previous gigabyte board that could do this, but don't know if this type of thing is featured on the UD5 board.

Yah, since I like to have the motherboard control the fan speed, I'm thinking of seeing if I can just stick my 3 pin zalman fan on there, otherwise I think I'll get the Prolimatech Megahalems Rev.B CPU Cooler - although I'm still trying to research if this heatsink will block one of the UD5's memory slots. Been googling ud5 and megahalems, but it's been pointing that it might block one of the memory slots especially if the memory has a heatsink on it. Ugh.
