unless you are people like us who actually pay attention to hardware news, there is really not a way to know.
sure reviews may show the truth in performance, but when things have been a certain way for quite some time, people become accustomed to that. anyone buying a 4870 or 5870 knew that what they were getting was one of ATI's high end cards.
unless ATI makes an effort to inform people about this (which i am almost positive they will not) then the majority of people will have no idea.

You enter a shop or a site, there's 5 gpu's: HD 6850-6870- 6950-6970-6990..

the 6870 is 250-300 dollars the 6970 is 400-450 dollars (don't know the price yet it's just for the example ).... what will you think first ? the 6870 is the high end model ? so what is the 69xx cards ? and if you don't know it: what will you ask to the vendor ( yes this is in general what are doing peoples who have no clue about hardware )

It's not like the 6870 will be the only one model ....

Someone who want a high performance cards, go in shop with 500$ and look for the best, and ask the top model ... Someone who don't want put so much money in a GPU, look for low model and this is what he will get.
