I think nothing can help against polution. You cant shoot what you cant see. In this case, even camera cant see.

    now don't get all worried...

you can still get some decent and even nice pics if the subject is closer...

you'll probably find more use of a UWA lens rather than a telephoto zoom lens in shanghai...
at street level, there is still tons of things to take pics of.

and some areas, and certain time of night, it was allright...

this was the bund at night...

sorry bout the shake... i was in a cab...

this is 24-105 with a closer subject

this is a quick pic of the room...

    hahaha... 180 deg window...
kitchen, 2 bath, and the works...
room was too big for just me... hahaha

I've been shooting with my Xti(400D) since it came out 4years ago. I still get excellent shots and not even with uber nice glass, just 50 1.8 and 28-135 and kit lens. I realized having this starter camera and really learning from it helped me fully appreciate the better features on higher end cameras and whenever I'm bumming my friends 7D or 5Dii I am able to utilize the better features much more extensively than my friends who jumped straight into the high end.

Well, you sound skeptical, do like I did, start out with a low end camera.
It will satisfy you when you are new and you will be able to grow on it and find out if the hobby interests you.

For some odd reason, I'm okay with slightly used but I dislike refurbished.

What about that deal? Are those two lens okay? Is it really necessary to have an extra battery?

I hope Shanghai clears up because I'll be there for one month then I'll be in Taiwan for another.

With those two lenses at least you are flexible. Great for starting out.

Extra battery? Don't know about D5000's power consumption, but if it's like the Canon 450D then I would say not needed, however it probably costs very little and there is nothing wrong with carrying a recharged spare.

    That deal looks nice.

Before you buy, go to the nearest store and try em out, just in case

YAYAY! So much fun shooting! However I noticed that some dust already got onto the lens, what is the safest way to clean it?

For just tiny amount of dust my favorite is a "lenspen", this little tool has a brush you can extract by pulling a button, it removes dust like a champ.
On the other side it has a sort of rubberish thingy that I can remove fingerprints with.

A microfiber cloth works well to

And yes, show us some pictures!

I'm sure the best photographers in the business utters those phrases too

keep shooting, I learn something new every time I take pics.
not sure if we have same HUD (inside viewfinder), there's these +/- that goes either too bright or too dark pictures (in the left corner in D3000), it's nice coz from there you can make your adjustment before taking the actual shot.

oh I miss Red Robin burgers

just as a heads up, those lens pens ARE NOT what you want to be using inside the camera. Anything with a brush WILL collect dust and other particles and will scratch the mirror or ccd/cmos in an instant. It's fine on the lens, just keep it away from the insides.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help! I haven't responded since being so busy in Asia however yesterday I did something so stupid! In the end, I dropped the camera and my 55-200 lens broke! So now I'm thinking of getting a new lens, any suggestions?

Since I did not want to start a new thread, I guess I'll post some of my pictures here. BTW any other suggestion for lens? Didn't want to break the bank exactly!

Don't know yet, I'm thinking a couple Benjamins? My biggest concern wasn't the lens but the body itself. Interesting enough it didn't even get scratched and it worked perfectly afterwards!
