Ok, little tip I just discovered this morning. Others might already know this but ...
When populating your RAM in the Intel board, pay attention to where you put the modules. Pay REAL CLOSE attention.
Mine has 3GB of RAM installed, but I discovered it was only seeing 2GB of that. As it turns out, I had them installed wrong.
If you have 3 modules, they need to go in slots 1A, 2A and 3A ... NOT, as I had it, 1A, 1B and 2A. If you do the latter the board sees it as one complete dual channel set and an incomplete set, which it apparently ignores. If you put them in in the first patter I stated, you get all three modules working in single channel mode. Slot 1A is next to the power connector, btw.

While the idea IS appealing, the drama I'd get for doing so is not.

Unless you find someone who is selling the CPU's for cheap, there is no point for so many boards.

What's that Dear?
It's the new NAS unit.
Yes I did tell you about it.
We need it to store all those episodes of The Bold And The Beautiful you keep recording.
No, Dear. I don't have any ulterior motives.
Why yes, I suppose it could do my "computer thing" ... I'm glad you suggested that!
(it's an old 5MB HDD btw. Yes that's five megabyte.)

That's ok, we have a pair of used IBM P690 UNIX mainframes at work that are for sale. 32 cores each. I'd love to run those![]()

Sorry guys I need to raise the white flag.
I've been wrestling with Ubuntu the past few weekends on my sossaman and I'm getting rather fed up. Every other thing I try with this doesn't work. Linux works but XP doesn't. A Terminal session through Putty works but VNC doesn't. WCG works but GPUGRID doesn't...
XP wouldn't connect to the net and google has not been my friend in finding any Lan drivers. So I installed ubuntu to get the thing crunching - which it has happily done since.
VNC not so much of a biggie - I'll just pull my other monitor off of my main machine when I need to.
My main gripe is my 275 sitting idle for two weeks. I've tried uninstalling BOINC to check that the protected application thing wasn't checked by accident however each time I re-install it I don't see that option screen. This was done through the terminal if that makes any difference?
I thought then that maybe I need to install the linux drivers for the 275. Finally figured out how to run a .run file and this pops up;
When I select to update GPUGRID it returns the message "Message from server: ACEMD2: GPU molecular dynamics is not available for you..."
Any ideas?![]()

Hang on let me see if I can find the XP drivers for the LAN for you. I know they exist, I used them before.

You could do one of two things - tell it no more work, and let it run its queue out, or detach from the project so that it reassigns the units to somebody else.

To use VNC in Ubuntu you need to install the Vino Server, unless you used Ubuntu Server in which case there is no desktop to serve. For GPUGrid ... well you'll have to install the latest nVidia drivers rather than the ones in the repository.

Thanks as always guys. I've now got xp running the way I want with both wcg and gpugrid. I'll have another go at cross os vnc when my quad socket is online![]()
