1Gb of RAM or a better vid card?

My budget don't allow all of those so I need to choose between:
    2x512Mb RAM + R9800P or 1x512Mb RAM + X800Pro

What will be the prefer option for overclocking and gaming?
(If ill choose 512Mb of ram ill add another 512Mb stick further).
Oh, and these parts are for A64+NF250 setup.

Thanks, and sorry for my faint english im from Israel
    Cheers, Roy

I think the best thing to do is to get 2x512 + the raddy 9800Pro,
cause the X800 is still very new and i don`t suggest you to buy it.

1x512Mb RAM + X800Pro will be the best because if you have money after 1-2 months you will have to buy only 512MB RAM, and if you buy now 2x512Mb RAM + R9800P soon you may need to change the video card and you will sell the 9800Pro very cheap and you will have to pay more for a new video.
You can always look at 6800Ultra or GT.

"A64+NF250 setup" So no dual channel.

Go for x800 Pro and 512MB, add another 512MB later ...

    It's S754 setup, so no dual-channel...
Anyway when i'm gaming i'll use 2x512Mb setup and when i'm benching i'll use only 1x512Mb setup for better stability.

    More replies are welcome.

    definitely 1x512+x800p

im really unhappy with my 9800p's performance, right now
and most games dont need 1gig of ram, especially if u have a 256mb vid card and a small agp aperture size

Go for X800 - very easy to add 512 more later. And now you will get to play with an uber card

would def go for 1x512mb and the new X800pro (unless you wait and get the X800XT;-))
as mentioned before it´s easier/cheaper to upgrade mem with another stick later on!

This is a very tough decision. Games like Ut2004, farcry and Battlefield Vietnam almost need 1gb of ram, or i've found they run alot better with 1gb of ram. However you also need a powerfull video card.

In the end, I'd go with the 1gb of ram and 9800pro. However you won't be dissapointed in either setup especially with an A64.

I'd get the 512 and X800 only because of ease of upgrade path. Every gaming rig deserves 1GB though. I almost suggested that first because when your comp goes for its page file, all your MHz this and video card power that are not going to save you. Wes used the perfect examples.

edit: oh, and this is general hardware folks. I don't see any overclocking. Sorry to be a pain but lets do it right.

uh yeah....try running bf vietnam with 512mb....LAGS LIKE HELL. We had to stop playing it at our last lan party because the people with 512mb were at the DEAD bottom of the standings due to lag. They would be flying a plane, lag, and boom, dead.

Try zooming in with the sniper rifle in far cry with 512mb ram. dont think so.

Try running a dedicated server on ut2004. nope.

get a gb of cheap ram (ch5) and get the x800, faster memory would not give you as much performence as a x800 over your 9800, but you need more than 512mb for some games to run them without any lags (bfv ,far cry...)

For the record, I don't get lag with 512mb of ram in bfv, farcry or ut2004. However it does run alot better whith 1gb of memory.

Not really fair. an extra 512 stick should cost ~150$ Diff between 9800 pro and x800 pro is about 250$.

x800 pro is brand new so you'll pay a ton for it
ram prices are insane so you'll pay a ton for it

I'd wait a little then get both. Prices on both should drop pretty soon. So you can get a gig of ram and a x800.

Anyone see a need for 2Gb for games coming out in the next year or so?

Far cry moves like a snail on 512 MB - 3 min to load and swap in the game as well. Flies on 1 GB.

x800 and then get 512mb asap.

I can play farcry, UT2k4, with only a 9800np(460/290), and 2x256mb of ram just fine. I do notice it needs more ram, but a better video card is needed by farcry more then more ram:P
