weevil here is a little dr'd version of your picture.
i used photoscape and did auto levels, auto contrast, sharpened at 150% @ 0.1 pixel then used the "Deepen" feature which doesnt darken it, it just deepens the colors and such.
then did "backlight" a couple of times and it added a pseudo HDR effect. although a low level one.
the wood is a little dark, so i could throw it in photoshop and use the sponge on the wood to lighten it up a bit but i am at work so...
i could also take the burn tool and go around the sign where you see the halo from the hdr style effect.

Lestat, would love to see what you could do with this pic, there was a forest fire about 10 miles from here when this pic was taken (and a lot of others) which all look washed out because of the smoke. Can your tools get rid of the smoke?

Edit: I don't think that's the raw, I thought it was because I uploaded it that way, but when I look at the size, its only half as large as the original on my hard drive, not sure how to upload it to photobucket without them down grading it?

editing the photos for contrast, and color is really easy man. even something as simple as Photoscape, which is free i might add, has enough features to edit photos.
the only real tool they are missing is a set of brushes to paint on effects instead of having to do the hole picture.
most of your photos i notice have a heavy lack of contrast and slightly lacking in color saturation. its like when you turn the contrast down on your TV and it gets that white haze over the picture.
i dont know if its your monitor when you pull them from the camera and how you adjust them or if its the camera itself if you are using the style set in the camera incorrectly.
alot of this can be fixed with really basic photoshop settings or even Gimp.
None of that is a bad thing, it just takes a few minutes to adjust each picture.
even my T2i, using highly customized Custom Style Sets needs some minor adjusting. but i dont think yours can do custom styles, otherwise i would give you the ones i have, they are a real blast to use. and most of them are already color corrected so you get really accurate colors out of them.
here is what i did with Photoscape here at work. what i couldnt do was remove the foggy haze in the background, or atleast saturate the mountains to help overcome the clouds.
none of them are great since i dont have photoshop here and i dont have the time to mess with them too much.

there is a link above the pictures that says full size, so you can see better what i did to it.

do you shoot in raw? or just jpeg. dont forget you can do RAW+L for raw+jpeg.
i personally consider RAW files much more complex to adjust, as they are by nature. i realize there is loss in jpeg, but i have never noticed and discernable loss. maybe a teensy bit here and there but not anything mind blowing.
and this also can be attributed to my lack of RAW Editing even though i know what the settings do, at times i find it doesnt do anything better than what i do with the jpeg. again, this is a lack of working with raw alot.
pictures i want to keep and show off should be done in raw i realize and i do, but i rarely edit the raw.
what i actually do is cheat a little. i might make some adjustments in the RAW editor, but the biggest one is that i tell it that its the largest size raw the program allows, which i think is what? 25mp ?
this resizes the raw alot, and then i adjust it, then save it as a jpeg. so the jpeg is huge, so that when i reduce it down i get an even better looking picture. its not massive, but i think its noticeable.

RAW is in Canon case named xxx.CR2 .. you can upload it to filesharing servers, or just use email - Daemonius@centrum.cz
If its JPEG or xxx.jpg, its just that you shoot into JPEGs.In that case, something can be done.. not much though.
RAW has advantage in numerous ways, but some software skills are needed. Though its not that hard..

masca is correct, it opens alot of doors vs jpeg.
one thing that MIGHT help a little, although you rarely if ever see it in the actual jpeg is change the camera to shoot in Adobe RGP and not sRGB.
some of my canon custom styles instantly show a difference because they were created in Adobe RGB and sRGB compresses them so to speak.
but i do realize that you are also shutter speed limited. a max of 4000 is all you can get and alot of your shots are very sunny days, so you end up over exposing them.
you should look into getting an ND filter, a ND4 or ND8 would work great. and ND4 should suffice most of the time to bring you under 4000 shutter speed thus giving proper exposure. but an ND8 would be great for those really sunny days or beach shot where you have light reflecting off the water.
dropping your aperture too will help alot. so instead of F4 shoot F8 or something. i think the last time i had a max exposure issue i went to 2.8~4 and was able to keep it under 4000
***The MOST important thing here is if YOU are happy with your shots... it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. even though many of my shots are quite unnatural because i apply vignetting, cross processing, velvia and other effects, i think alot of them are cool, for me.****

ok Weevil here ya go, i decided to do a little 50/50 for you.
left is untouched. ie; the picture above.
the right is nothing more than the Burn Tool in photoshop. - i just moved the slider to 50%, i didnt care what the result was as long as it wasnt too much.
it is too much in spots though.
the point here is that, this is 1 tool.. just one, in photoshop... and look at the difference.
the sign picture is the same but,, the left side is the burn tool and the right side is untouched.
also 1/2 the sign was burnt so i could show the difference.
these were done hapharzardly, so they wont look the best, but its just a point i am making of 1 tool can be of sooo much help.
