    IDF and storage implications

well guys i have made a list of the presentations that i am going to watch at IDF that pertain to storage:

Solid-State Drive (SSD) Endurance Verification Neal Mielke 2011 9/14/2010

Enterprise Solid-State Drive (SSD) Endurance Scott Doyle, Ashok Narayanan 2011 9/14/2010

solid-State Drive (SSD) Impacts on the Run-Time Performance of A-List Games 4 Speakers 2011 9/14/2010

Solid-State Drive (SSD) Optimizations in Enterprise Client IT, Server and Storage Environments 5 Speakers 2011 9/14/2010

Next Generation RAID and SAS Susan Bobholz, Clive D'Souza 2009 9/15/2010

Overclocking Intel® Desktop and Mobile Platforms Michael Moen, Dan Ragland 2008 9/14/2010

cant wait for IDF! time to get the info on the new an upcoming! love this time of year, computing is in the air!!
tons of other good topics, but here are a few more i am interested in:

ntel® Next Generation Microarchitecture Codename Sandy Bridge: New Processor Innovations Opher Kahn, Bob Valentine 2002 9/13/2010

Enhancing the Intel® QuickPath Interconnect for Next Generation Intel® Microarchitecture Codename Sandy Bridge Bob Maddox 2002 9/13/2010

Intel® Parallel Studio and Programming Models: Essential Tools to Tap Multi-Core Performance James Reinders 2005 9/14/2010

Getting the Most from Intel® Processor Based Media Technologies Hong Jiang 2006 9/14/2010

Next Generation Intel® Microarchitecture Codename Sandy Bridge for Embedded Troy Willes 2007 9/14/2010

the really great thing about IDF is they take online questions LIVE!! you can type it in and they will answer it, and even mention your name, so its always good if you can catch them live. if not, they stream video for months afterward!

    Live feed from 2008?

Here is the main IDF 2010 page. I have not found the webcast placeholders for Tuesday's technical sessions:

IDF 2010: SandForce Using Intel 25nm MLC Flash On SSDs

SandForce SSDs Highlighted At IDF 2010

he drive was using a SandForce SF-1222 controller on a prototype PCB (notice the green wire soldered on this engineering sample) that used Intel 25nm MLC NAND flash with part number 29F16B08CAMEI. Both Intel and SandForce confirmed that Intel 25nm Flash is due to be released in Q4 2010 and should bring improvements in both density and performance. This is great news as in recent months Intel’s own controller and flash chips has become uncompetitive sequential write speeds. Intel confirmed that they will be releasing 600GB, 300GB and 160GB configurations of 25nm MLC Flash SSDs. The SandForce demo drive seen in the photos here was said to be 256GB in size, so the capacity of the drive will depend on the controller being used and of course the density and numbers of chips used.

Also at the booth was the OCZ RevoDrive X2, which is a PCI Express-based SSD that features four Sandforce controllers on-board for some 4-way RAID performance. This PCI Express SSD leverages a PCIe x4 interface for high data throughput that avoids the bottleneck of the traditional SATA interfaces. The RevoDrive X2 features four SandForce SSD Processors enabling up to nearly 1 Terabyte of storage capacity. SandForce said that the RevoDrive X2 is basically an existing RevoDrive that we have already reviewed with the additional expansion card added to it from day one. By adding two additional controllers and more storage space the drive performance improves. SandForce had one on display at the booth that was hitting peak sequential read speeds in the 740MB/s range with writes approaching an equally impressive 730MB/s. SandForce said that 4K random writes are rated at up to 120,000 IOPS and showed us a live demo and the test system that was being hammered on all night hit 105,000 IOPS.

They also had some enterprise and OEM solutions that shouldn't make it to the retail market and one was rather interesting that we have to show you. They have a SATADIMM, which is what looks like a memory module, but is really an SSD. SandForce informed us that if you are out of space to install drives in a server, but have open memory slots a device like their SATADIMM can be used for additional storage space. The memory module device uses power from the memory slot to power the controller and NAND Flash and then a SATA connector is plugged into your motherboard for the data transfer just like a traditional HDD or SSD.

Taking a look at the back side of the SATADIMM you can see the SATA connector that is used for SATA II 3.0Gbps data transfer.

SandForce informed us that they have 50GB, 100GB, 200GB SATADIMM modules available today with a 400GB SATADIMM becoming available next quarter. SandForce also said that they have MLC & SLC configurations available depending on the customer needs. The SATADIMM has Enterprise Class performance and speeds of 30k IOPS is easily possible. The SATADIMM also has Supercap for power fail protection and will be validated across mainstream server motherboards.

This is a very cool little device and who knows if something like this will ever catch on in the industry.

Intel is still expected to release G3 SSDs using the 25nm flash in Q4 of this year. I'm not sure why there has been little mention of these new Intel G3 SSDs at IDF. I was expecting to hear about them, but there is nothing specific on Intel's IDF coverage, and the independent news coverage has not mentioned them being at IDF either.

Looking at the SF10_SSD003_100 slides it appears that “dual drive software” solutions are on the way.

     Dual drive software-
 Spans HDD & SSD to provide one drive letter
 Dynamically allocates data to the SSD based on usage models to maintain performance

Configures libraries in Windows OS –
 Move user data folders to HDD (Docs, Music etc)
 Once configured, seamless for end users
 Maintains many performance benefits of SSD

Just as well as Intel seem to think that SSDs may never be price competitive to HDD

i think this winter will be my time to finally purchase an SSD.
that 160GB model is quite tempting.

Here is all of the IDF presentations in one place. it is going to take me a week to watch all of the ones that interest me, but dude, i love 'em!
here is audios, select few are video. ALL are informative as hell.

    https://intel.wingateweb.com/us10/sc...og/catalog.jsp
    http://www.intel.com/idf/pressroom/index.htm

i will tell you this...i watched the intel next generation microarchitecture codename sandy bridge: new processor innovations
and it blew my mind. absolutely riveting! the new power boost is about the most intelligent thing i have ever seen. man i cannot wait until SB. i am not buying a six core. ever. that is for girly men! bring on the ten core !!

@A01 the dual drive concept is gaining traction on several fronts, glad to see intel joining the fray! they are leaders in innovation so there will be some exciting concepts coming up.

yeah Knut Grimsud is the man. i was looking at his profile on the IDF webpage a few days ago while video chatting with tilt and i will tell you this, his list of patents is amazing! and being the director of storage based technologies for intel he would be about the best informed guy on the planet. If i could speak with anyone one on one about computers today, he would probably be it.
ssd may never be price competitive on a capacity v. price standpoint....but man on performance v. performance they smoke!
probably wil be moving onto memristors before ssd become competitive price/GB
