This is Xilence 2 Component Fan PWM - 140mm

For now... Build quality is very low on Xilence fans, they will develop parasite noises soon.

After looking at this thing and reading reviews I have a question:

How well would this work in a Silent PC configuration? I'm talking about running it without any fans. It seems to have more then enough surface area.

    http://lab501.ro/racire/thermalright...a-titanilor/33 - the fanless comparison specifically (i7 920 3Ghz 1.03v, open stand, 86.2C)

    translate from romanian...

The NH-D14 is probably the best option for fanless operation, but a couple or a trio of 500-800RPM fans would still be quiet, and work to 4Ghz.

I ran my 920 with 1.2v load at 3.8ghz and temps were kept under 80C after a 1 hour run of LinX with full memory load. Room temp was 22C. This was in a HAF 932 though but I did have the top, rear, and side fans connected to the board and slowed. With a 5870 I played BC2 for hours for several days on end without ever having a problem. I think the longest time was 5 or 6 continuous hours. Never had any artifacting or crash.

My 5870 never gets over 35% fan speed during game play so I couldn't hear my system at all. My system does sit on the floor next to my desk so I've got some room between me and it to let noise dissipate a little.

No you have to use a round frame 140mm fan. Square 140mm fans don't work.

I actually ran fan testing on my D14 with various 140mm fans, including several with square frames. They were lifted up at one corner, but were OK. If I had wanted to use one of them I would have had to cut the frame.

I did cut the frame of my Scythe Kaze Maru 2 1700 rpm fan to allow the Noctua clips to swing around properly (pic). I also filed down the ears of my Kaze Maru 1900 rpm fan to allow the clip pegs to push through enough to use the Noctua clips. All doable.

But I discovered that although I could get somewhat better performance with a better fan, i got a lot more noise. For equivalent noise you should just use higher performance fans in push-pull and leave the center position empty. You get a cute little hurricane in there when you do that, and great cooling performance.

    i want the D14.

i also want PI G.Skill Ram which has an annoyingly high ramsink, but nice low latency spec. @1.6V

    on a GB X58 UD3R Rev. 2.0 MB.

im assuming there might be clearance issues. perhaps an equivalent ram with lower sinks anyone got the knowledge? / alternatives?

You can 14cm fans if you use Megahalem fan clips. They work just fine on the NH-D14

Unless the new ones are taller than the old silver (blue?) ones you just need to turn the cooler south. Granted I have an Asus board but I have no problems with those Pi (I think they are ~60mm tall).

Just use the regular 12cm fan clip for the Megahalem. No modification is required. Simply put the fan clip in the ridge along the NH d14. Sorry I don't have a photo since I switched coolers but it very easy.

I have 2 TRUX clip, can it be used as well for modding the D14 for 3 fans configuration ?

Hi thanks, your pics is very helpful for a new user of Noctua D14 to clearly describe the space between ram and the hsf, I am watching the thread as well.
Btw I'd like to ask the same question, can I use TRUX clip to mount the third fan on the Noctua D14 ?

Dunno. Never seen a TRUX clip or even a TRUE clip. All I've seen are Megatron, Noctua and Scythe. Sorry.
