Anyone who knows about brand recognition cares. If it didn't matter, they would have changed it on day one.

Regular folks won't know, that AMD Radeon is the same thing as ATI Radeon. Especially if they change colors too.

stupid move from amd if true, it wont boost the amd brand, they will just lose a second brand, and actually i think ati is a stronger brand than amd lol...
but i wouldnt be surprised if this is true...

Im sure they have done their research but is there really a need to get rid of the ATi name?

It's a good move since AMD brand name will spread into GFX card segment and people will hear more often about AMD,be it CPUs or GPUs or APUs .
First Fusion chips will be the first designs that were designed from the grounds up in AMD since the merger in 2006.

On one hand, if done right, people will be more inclined to buy AMD CPU with AMD GPU.

On the other hand, they might temporarily lose costumers, that won't know what happened with the ATI brand.

If they do go through and change the name it will be amusing to say I have an Intel/AMD rig, even though I do already but it just sounds so different from Intel/ATI inside.

I think it will benefit sales since less informed people are inclined to match brand name parts with the same brand to be "compatible" with each other.

Could people who don't understand my point please stop patronize me?

Since Bulldozer is a totally different architecture, and marks the biggest leap AMD have done since K7, or maybe ever. It's highly unlikely that they will sell it under the Phenom brand, if they changed name when the introduced Phenom they will do it again with this much larger step.
The same goes for Bobcat. They could sell it as some kind of Athlon or Turion, but they want to target Atom with this one, and a new name is very likely. And Llano might get a new name as well. Maybe they'll brand Llano and Bobcat as Fusion after all.

Not really. You're looking at it single sided. But as someone said, it will be a lot easier to advertise everythign under one brand (AMD) and ppl will also connect the success of the Radeon cards with AMD processors. It will not happen over the night, but it will. And this will help them a lot long term.

ATI vs Nvidia is like AMD vs Intel. No one cares about them.

-Which one is better, Intel or AMD? -"Intel!" -Why? -"Because it just is!"
-Which one is better, ATI or Nvidia? -"Nvidia" -Why? -"Because it just is!"

Many, many people are like that. The problem is the reasoning. The brand. It just is.

Edit: Based on my experience when I was doing internship at a local HW store. Also reflects well with some IRC discussions with these "gamers". There are exceptions though.

I agree bulldozer step is far from other steps.

So, see a new name would be interesting. Phenom name was bad at start and now with the II it's not so bad, but not terrible.
Phenom III would be not a good name for bulldozer but i think this is the best way, to not spend so much in communication. Even it's not the same product.
People will have a new view of Phenom with the III soon if all review are giving awards.

I think ATi logo should stay, even there is no ATi anymore but just AMD. On 5870, box i don't see a big AMD logo before the ATi ones, people know radeon name, but Stop using ATi logo is a mistake. Why ? Because Green / red , and blue vs / green.

AMD can't fight in two different colors on same logo, or use actual AMD logo for radeon, green vs green would be a bit a problem.

If the want stop the ATi name, they should change the AMD logo and colors.
And green + red = no color or two color logo.

i must say i do think changing the name to AMD will help when people buy a laptop thats Intel/AMD (took me forever to understand what some of you meant when you said that, i guess i just need some coffee). if they just see the name out there alot more often they cant help but start to recognize it.

i think it's about time. in my opinion the amd/ati naming is just confusing for the average joe. surf to ati.com and you'll be redirected to the amd website, which might be confusing for some people. furthermore, game.amd.com - the drivers and gaming portal of amd/ati nowhere shows the ati logo. the only thing you'll see is the amd vision logo.

so the ati logo is just found on the retail box of the graphics card.

for amd such a step absolutely makes sense - as long as they keep the radeon brand. however, to keep the red color for graphics and the green color for processors would make sense as well.

@the "amd ccc" screenshot. i'd really welcome if the ccc would look like that! way better than the "one button for everything"-navigation fail they have on their vista/7 ccc atm. fortunately, the winxp ccc still has the old style navigation tree on the left which is way superior imo.
imo, amd's software is visually appealing - e.g. the amd overdrive software. looks pretty cool and "finished". the ati ccc always looked half baked and had a pretty weak visual appearnce...

I think there won't be much changes, Ati will become the name of the product, like Geforce is to nvidia. AMD won't ditch Ati name into oblivion, it is much wiser to use it as the graphics card name.

Perhaps they should have taken a different path for the past few years. Branding everything as ATI (by AMD), then swapping over solely to AMD would have provided better continuity. Either way, AMD needs to be built up further as a brand.

Hmmmm I hope they do not change it to AMD. I like ATI better not to mention loyal customer base as well. Would be a dumb business move as many people look at AMD as the cheap alternative instead of the top tier stuff. Be like shooting themselves in the leg.

^keep in mind, people need to know that ATI is AMD inorder to get their laptop "platform" recognition.

not many here have any clue how this will plan out for real, depending on the advertisement, or reviews, or the ability to just get more units out there and flood the market with laptops, things could be very rocky the next year due to the name change, or it could be very welcoming to people since they see AMD+AMD and assume its a good fit.
