i dont have a 460 here only a gttx 470 and 3 gt 240 but i might plan a little budget for a uber cruncher rig( something like a i7, msi xpower and 6 gt 240 or anything else that can give the best ppd for 600$ for the gpu)

    +1 on this

this will be a very efficient machine, the 240's wont suck too much juice, and you'll only need a quality 550w PSU. only downside to this is that there's not that many single slot 240's to choose from. you definitely cant have 6 dual slots in there.

evga and pny gt 240 are singe slot and i have a spare 1kw silverstone strider plus psu with 80+ silver efficiency just need to find the budget to get the i7, xpower, 6 gt 240 and a cooler for the i7.

    3 x 460's might work out nice also depending on exactly the PPD they average. 3 x 40,000 - 50,000 = 120,000 - 150,000ppd and wattage should be ~450w. I think 240's avg 18,000 or so and 80w = 108,000ppd and 480w; the price is great though with some of them being $40 after rebate = $240.

I'm unfamiliar with the i5/i3 1156 boards and if they have 3 pci-e that would fit 3 dual slot cards. Maybe a low cost 32nm i3/i5 may make a good low power GPU crunching host, 70 - 80w under load might be nice. Not much good for CPU crunching but you can dedicate 100% of the cpu for GPUgrid and have lower power usage from the cpu and lower cpu/mobo cost?

nm, a quick newegg search shows 1156 boards are no good for fitting 3 gpu's

i already have a evga p55 ftw that can hold 3 dual slot gpu nicely but i might also just wait for the gts 450 to come which 3 of them would cost me 450$ versus 550$ for 6 gt 240 and could get around 90k-120k ppd or wait even longer for some gt 440 that would cost around 100$ and if there is some single slot i could buy 6 of those and have a even better ppd.

Don't wait too long, you could crunch millions of points worth of WU's in the time you wait for slower GPU's, whip out that credit card

the gt240's don't even draw close to 80w, mine only uses 38w. i used kill-a-watt and used a bunch of math to figure this out haha. the results were pretty consistent within 2watts. so 6 of these pull only about 240w, roughly just a little more than a single 295 or 480.

you won't even need close to 1kw for this i7 rig, i honestly think a 550w will still give you a small headroom. a decent OC'ed i7 ~250w, and 6 gt240 ~250w for a total of 500w AC from the wall. but this is AC current, PSU's are rated for DC current, so this is roughly only 400w DC assuming you only have an 80% efficient PSU. i would save that 1kw PSU for something more needy

i hate playing the waiting game for CPU's and GPU's. i'm not sure when the when the gts450 or gt440 will come out, if it even ever will come out. there's never any sales on gt240's in canada? i might be able to help you out getting some of the deals here. they're typically $30-50 after savings. yesterday, there was an evga single slot one for $15 haha.

oh you just got lucky buddy. i was out the whole day yesterday until midnight, and since i was gone, someone in the house just turned that machine off because it was too loud . whenever i'm home, i guard it haha.

    Where? Is it still up?

$15 I'd take 4 without even thinking twice...

it was on newegg, but now out of stock. it was $15 for a few hours, then they increased the price to $30, i hesitated for a few days, and by the time i decided to sit down and buy it, it went OOS haha. should have snatched a few when i had the chance, even at $30. they stocked a few hundred at the time i checked too...

Thats cause i have a silverstone strider plus 1kw psu collecting dust in my closet but it still work damm fine and i want to use it. I have also a spare 4 gtb ddr3 memory kit that i want to put to good use and i am already minded to spend maximun 600$ on the gpu. The planned build right now look like 3 gtx 460 with a phenom II x6 1055t and a am3 board. But i can only start to buy stuff in 2 week since i am a student and i dont have a pretty credit limit. So i am still thinking about it. And no newegg canada dosent seem to be as much crazy as the american newegg for shell schoker special deal.

Yeah, at $30 though I'll buy one when I have something to put it in, at $15 I'll buy 4 now and replace my 260 till I have something else to put it in.
