AMD Tapes Out First "Bulldozer" Microprocessors.

Advanced Micro Devices, the world's second largest supplier of microprocessors, said that it had taped out the first central processing units (CPUs) based on the code-named Bulldozer core. The company hopes to begin sampling of the chips with customers shortly and initiate mass production sometimes in 2011.

If they see good enough yields and stability in initial testing I wouldn't mind them selling early even if they have a low supply...they kinda need it on the market.

this is good news. but... for amds sake it had better have the same/ more power than SB. the only way i see amd getting out of intels shadow; is with another win like k6-k8.

    +1

but i fear that the delays have cost AMD the performance advantage, when it takes several extra years to complete your design that can add a lot of extra cost without necessarily improving the products performance.

also, it doesn't help that intel's compiler is the most popular among software engineers...

I can't wait to see how the "inverse ht" works in scientific computing... if it really pwn's 4.5GHz i7 in single threaded applications then I'll definitely get one, as optimizing my code for multi-threading takes so much time.

K6 was a slight FAIl IMO, but K7, K8, K8 Dual-Core and Deneb were great (k7+K8 were real game changers)

I highly doubt it will be better then SB, maby their low end 1155 but i dont see it competing with their high end 8 cores which will be around 2011

Another thing I find funny is AMD/Intel would snipe any of our Moms on a grocery run if it meant good quarterly results, and you are forever whining about what feser did?

AMD definitely needs another silver bullet like Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 X2. We need competition in this industry for the sake of competition.

": Bulldozer for the high end desktop and server space and Bobcat for the price/power efficient ultra mobile market" just a diagram

Hi Guys, unfortunately, despite what this article implies, AMD is NOT targeting the high end with bulldozer. A quote from AMD's blog:
" “Bulldozer” is AMD’s completely new, high performance architecture for the mainstream server, mainstream desktop and notebook PC markets that employs a new approach to multithreaded compute performance for achieving advanced efficiency and throughput. “Bulldozer” is designed to give AMD an exceptional CPU option for linking with GPUs in highly scalable, single-chip Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) configurations. "

Notice the use of mainstream in "mainstream server, mainstream desktop and notebook PC markets".

Will bulldozer be faster? Yes it will. Will it target high end/enthusiasts? No it won't. Enthusiasts will be using intel for the forseeable future unforunately.

Hmm. I really wish they'd have shown off a block diagram of the whole CPU.

The way it reads, it sounds like it will be 4 "cores", each with two smaller cores in it(what I called half-cores) making a total of 8 threads. I guess they don't want to show to much of their hand.

sure .... believe what you want ....

amd did bulldozer as an easy way to have a cpu for different market needs .... low end mainstream and high end ... thats all this blog post said ... but you saw something else in it .... wanna guess why?

and please where did you see word for word those exact word you posted earlier???

lol dont get me wrong BD will be good, but i think sandybridge is gonna pullaway, by the time they release BD sandybridge will be out and intel will be working on their new Ivybrige 22nm cpu's.. And what i wrote is what i strongly believe..

Why speculate and even fight over a product that's not out yet? We will all just have to wait and see.
As quoted by LowRun......"So, we are one week past AMD's worst case scenario for BD's availability but they don't feel like communicating about the delay, I suppose AMD must be removed from the reliable sources list for AMD's products launch dates"

Words of wisdom. From that article, in the first paragraph no less:

In 2011 AMD will introduce two next-generation microarchitectures: Bulldozer for the high end desktop and server space and Bobcat for the price/power efficient ultra mobile market.

Gee, now here's a original thought!
Why don't we all be smart and follow his advice..
And if you think I'm not interested, I'm running a board thats supposed to be BD ready!

I agree that we shouldn't fight. But why on earth would we want to speculate about a product after it's out?

not bad... but knowing amd i wouldnt be surprised if bulldozer ends up competing with haswel
lets hope they manage to roll this out quickly and without any problems... the last 2 times they really reworked their architecture it was pretty ugly, and even a tweak aka deneb took a good while...
