with it like my 920 and 980x.im sure it will be a breeze with the x58A-UD3R
this board has never let me down, great OCer for sure

This is a great board and I am having a hard time deciding if I should keep my UD3R or the UD7. It seems like anything the UD7 can do the UD3R can do easier, but it could just also be the beta bios that I am on for the UD7.

Back from Xpower to UD3R and Thermaltake Frio on it.

Really nice MB, but is ugly for me, specially when you came from Classified 760 :P...

Just swapped in a UD3R V2 and had some major headache. Everything i touched was no post, no boot, or unstable - i already thought the board has a problem. Well, until i found out that this is oc for dummies... .
It works fine by leaving everything on auto and just set the ratio to 2:10, vram to 1.60v and pulling 200x21. The G.Skill 6GB F3-16000CL9 are running at 2000 MHz 9-9-9-24 1T. Vcore on auto settles at 1.36v for the 920 D0 which is perfectly fine. Maybe i can keep 1T at 4.3 GHz, i'll try this evening.

    Happy so far...

I've been a little busy over the past few days just tuning the board to ideal 24/7 settings whilst staying within the usual heat/volts threshold:

EIST is enabled and working perfectly, and really does give temp temps as low as 30°C if idle for long enough!

Now testing at 212x21 which will give me 4.45GHz stability, but it seems to need a big jump in volts around this region. Ambient is a little warm at 27°C so when it cools I should have the headroom to hit that 4.5GHz mark.

All this is with the latest F6K bios which works just as well (if not, better) than the other F6 revisions.

Thanks for he heads up on the bios Andrea - will update asap and report back.

On another note, is anyone experiencing major lag or corruption whilst using the jMicron eSata? Having a bit of an issue on my backup drive atm, and and a little concerned about my drive or board being fudged. When copying big files, it'll start off all guns blazing and speed is good, then drive activity will just stop for a minute or so, then continue to let about 10MB of data through between 10-30 second pauses...
Listening back to audio recordings seem to stutter and pause, playback is stuttering the same when seeking back to same place, so my cause for concern grows about some of my data.
Bloody Jmicron controller seems to be behaving weirdly, and their site leaves little to be desired. Marvell don't even have any SATA drivers available, but took the time to upload a video bragging about their SATA3 performance. Luckily they sem to be operating fine.

I've upped the voltage on the ICH and IOH to see if things improve, although I fear my drive may already be hosed. I was just about to embark on a 750G RAID1, and 1TB RAID0 setup too

Luckily I do still have backups elsewhere so I will update the bios, and report back.

*edit - turns out F6m is a bit pants for me. Now trying F5 properly, if it yeilds nothing better then I might stick with F6k.

*edit 2 - MY eSata problem was to do with the stupid Jmicron drivers - If you're using the eSata on W7 x64, do not install the jmicron eSata drivers, just stick with the default windows ones (and make sure you have AHCI enabled in bios or you wont have proper hot-plug support). I'm just glad my data is safe!

Please provide some feedback so I can finish tweaking and post a full set of results.
My main question: What should I try doing with the voltage settings to keep it stable @ 4ghz, and lower the vcore (and hopefully temperatures) ?

I am having problems tweaking voltages. It will not go past 4ghz using auto, and I would like to lower the voltages and get lower temps by tweaking it manually.

This is a stable 4.0ghz using auto voltage:

    Temperatures @ max Load:
    62C 2.8Ghz (133x21) Auto voltage
    68C 3.3ghz (150x22) Auto voltage
    77C 3.6ghz (164x22) Auto voltage
    78C 3.8ghz (173x22) Auto voltage
    88C 4.0ghz (182x22) Auto voltage
I can't believe the auto voltage works up to 4.0ghz...

Manual Voltage: (I fail at lowering temperature drop... partly because I am just learning what each of the new voltage settings do)
    78C Corsair H50 3.8Ghz (200x19) Rock Solid.
    86C Corsair H50 4.0Ghz (182x22) Bluescreens after a while in OCCT.

    Core i7 930 /w Corsair H50 + push/pull configuration venting out of the case.
    X58A-UDR3 revision 2 (FA bios)
Corsair DDR12800 8/8/8/24 (set manually as per rating... but it never reaches 1600mhz so I don't think the timings are too tight)
    Geforce GTX480
    Corsair 128gb SSD
    Corsair 950w PSU
    ASUS Xonar DX

Dumb question: What is the differences between a UD3R or UD7 (and other MB's in GB's 1366 lineup?) I have 2 UD3R's and a UD5 but I can't really tell any differences in them, specs look about the same and it seems like the ud3r and ud7 differences are all in the PWN system and the cooling. UD9 has upgraded PWM vs the ud7 and nf200 quad sli and an astronomical price tag (thats an easy one to tell the differences )

The phase/power delivery, the onboard LANs ( I think UD3R is only 1), the cooling setups, and the PCI/PCIE layout's differ for each as well.

Also the lesser models have different, or no onboard On/Off-Clear CMOS-Reset buttons

Yeah, where is this F6X? I've looked on tweaktown and US,UK and TW gigabyte sites, but nothing. I'm on F6n and 227 was my max stable bclk....

    Unless you force-flashed the UD7 F6x one?

*edit - I've just noticed FVA and FVB on tweaktown, what's different about these I wonder?! It's nice to have such a big choice though!

Yeah, I ended up reading from that point onwards. It's been pretty much standard behaviour for most of the 775/1366 boards I've owned with varying volumes. My P5B did it, along with an AsRock, and about 6 different P45 boards. The powersaving features cause the inductor coils to whine which I'm sure a lot of us have been familiar with in the past. The Gigabyte P45 boards seemed to have the least noise, but my UD3R makes the worst I've heard since the asRock! During Idle, and with nothing open I get very low noise, while playing a BD-R / avi it screeches away and under full load it's virtually silent again. This is of course with EIST & C1E enabled which cause the vcore to vary and inductors to whine.

So I'm assuming the 229 bclk was a UD7 bios flashed to the UD3R?

EIST and C1E are not the cause of the whining, it's when the user turns on D-VID (Dynamic VID). DVID turns CPU voltage down when it's idle and up when loaded, this is why the whining might appear when using a powersaving program as you said and you are completely right about that.

If the user don't use this function and set a constant VID then the board will be silent.

The thought did cross my mind that you meant x - as in any number, but as there was already a UD7 Bios named F6x you should see where we were a bit mixed up!

Nice bclk anyway Subaru, what's your max speed like? Volts for 4GHz & upwards?

If the user don't use this function and set a constant VID then the board will be silent.
Yes, I should have explained that better - you do indeed need dynamic VID enabled to get the noise, which is what I use on my 24/7 - 4.4GHz setup.

sorry about that, didn't know about UD7's f6x bios
    so this is with f6i

well, i can boot into windows at 225bclk, max is 230 as you can see but its only cpuz stable
for the core clock its not easy to answer because my cpu is hot as hell even lapped so i cannot bench it for maximum stability e.g. at 4ghz cause i easily hit 90c+ under linx. my max benchable on air is 4.3-4.35ghz 1.4v 4c/8t 3dvantage/06
i have a glacialtec f101pwm on it which is waay weaker than it needed, so i cannot tell you exact mhz to voltage combos above 3.6ghz.im currently using her at 3600core 4c/8t 1.21v load 3600 uncore 1800 7-8-7-20ram 1.33v vtt 3600mhz qpi. these are safe voltages and can be lowered..
