we can see now that nvidia's biggest problem may be what to do with gf100...and whether they'll continue to be stuck 8 months behind AMD. they are competitive now and beating 5970 looks trivial. but it is all for naught if AMD releases better stuff in time for the holiday shopping season.

"we have simply never seen such an incredible value in a $200 video card before."

nvidia is giving back to the little people

If the GX2 card from nvidia is GF104 based I don't think is going to beat 5970 by a significant margin I could be wrong though...

Couple reasons why this is an exciting release:

    1. Finally, not just one, but two cards in the $~200US price bracket that are worth recomending to people, without comrimise! (Performance/watt , OCing, noise - all good)

    2. The Performance of 1GB just might bring the 5850 back down to below its launch price 10mths ago.. something we've all been waiting for a long time.

One thing this card is not though, is an "8800GT Effect" .. The circumstances aren't even remotely similar to when that card was released.

To justify the above comment.. You have to keep a bit of perspective here, and remember whilst good value, this is a card that's barely faster than nvidias flagship DX10 GPU from 2008 (2 yrs ago) , the GTX280. Yes it OC's better, so it can pull a way, but doesn't change the fact much.. and it's not exactly going to be much of an upgrade for someone with such a card after so much time..

The 8800GT on the other hand, destroyed anything and everything from DX9 generation, (so was a heaven upgrade for anyone with a 7900 /x19xx) , soundly beat Ati's top of the line 'current generation', and was only marginly slower than their top of the line current generation.

Which made sense, since it was a die shrink, and a smart one at that.

You'd have to wait a repeat of their approach with a 'smart shrink of GF100 to get that sort of 'effect' again.

I see a Vapo(u)r-X cooler there on the reference card. Definate square/rectangular coldplate and Sapphire designed fins there.

I don't think so... why would it need a vapor chamber with two heatpipes and a giant flower like that with a copper core? just because you see a flat copper base doesn't make it a vapor chamber.

Great, good pressure from nVidia would mean lower price of ATi's current product and faster release of upcoming products (if they're actually ready to be released). It's a winner for everybody sans fanatic idiots from both camps.

GF 104 still have L2, just 7 polymorf units, not 15 as GF100.
    This is good.

NVIDIA GF104 - Full Implementation, No Disabled Logic

In order to facilitate superscalar operation, NVIDIA made some changes to both the warp scheduler and the dispatch unit for GF104. Each warp scheduler is now connected to 2 dispatch units, giving it the ability to dual-issue instructions. Along with its regular duties, a warp scheduler is now responsible for organizing its superscalar operation by analyzing the next instruction in its warp to determine if that instruction is ILP-safe, and whether there is an execution unit available to handle it. The result is that NVIDIA’s SMs now handle superscalar operation similar to that of a CPU, with the hardware taking the responsibility for dispatching parallel instructions. This in turn means that GF104 can execute a warp in a superscalar fashion for any code and including old CUDA code, allowing it to extract ILP out of old and new code alike. The GF104 compiler in NVIDIA’s drivers will try to organize code to better match GF104’s superscalar abilities, but it’s not critical to the ability.
NVIDIA GF104 SM - Note, more instructions in flight per SM vs. GF100

Ultimately superscalar execution serves 2 purposes on GF104: to allow it to issue instructions to the 3rd CUDA core block with only 2 warps in flight, and to improve overall efficiency. In a best-case scenario GF104 can utilize 4 of 7 execution units, while GF100 could only utilize 2 of 6 execution units.

The upside to this is that on average GF104 should be more efficient per clock than GF100, which is quite a remarkable feat. The downside to this is that now NVIDIA has a greater degree of best and worst case scenarios, as requiring superscalar execution to utilize the 3rd CUDA core block means that it’s harder to use that 3rd block than the previous 2. The ability to extract ILP from a warp will result in GF104’s compute abilities performing like a 384 CUDA core part some of the time, and like a 256 CUDA core part at other times. It will be less consistent, but on average faster than a pure 256 CUDA core part would be.

With the addition of superscalar abilities, GF104 marks the slow-but-steady merger of the CPU and the GPU. GF104 is now just a bit more CPU-like than GF100 was, a particularly interesting turn of events since we’re looking at a waterfall part and not a new architecture today.

Best $200 card you can get right now, but i do agree is no "8800gt". In fact, is barely faster than last year's model.

this is a very fair assessment of the 5-10 month delay by legionhardware:

Whichever way you slice it, the GeForce GTX 460 768MB was overall faster than the Radeon HD 5830 by a small margin in the dozen games that we tested with. Then when we measured the power consumption of each graphics card the GeForce GTX 460 again came out on top, using slightly less power. Furthermore the reference cooler also appears to do a much better job, as the GeForce GTX 460 was found to be 18 degrees cooler than the Radeon HD 5830 when under load.

The GeForce GTX 460 768MB is clearly the better choice of the two graphics cards in our opinion. However having said that the Radeon HD 5830 is almost 5 months old now, making the GeForce GTX 460 a considerably newer product. Furthermore the Radeon HD 5000 series has been available for almost 10 months now, which hardly makes the technology cutting edge anymore.

Something else to consider is that at $220 US the GeForce GTX 460 1GB graphics card will be 27% cheaper than the [$300] Radeon HD 5850, despite being just 7% slower on average. On average the GeForce GTX 460 1GB was 17% slower than the GeForce GTX 470, which is a fairly decent margin. However at $220 US the GeForce GTX 460 is 31% cheaper.

Overall, by redesigning the GeForce GTX 460 to remove the unnecessary bits, making it a more compact and efficient GPU, it appears that Nvidia has created the perfect mid-range graphic cards. We genuinely like the GeForce GTX 460 in either its 768MB or 1GB flavors, and prefer it to the ATI competition.

You just don't know what the 8800gt was then. Do you think the nvidia personnel making the comparison are idiots? Really, what do you know that they don't?

Both cards are high value mainstream-performance that make higher end cards ALMOST look bad. It is an obvious and valid comparison.

Finally, we have the ROPs. There haven’t been any significant changes here, but the ROP count does affect compute performance by impacting memory bandwidth and L2 cache. Even though NVIDIA keeps the same number of SMs on both the 1GB and 768MB of the GTX 460, the latter will have less L2 cache which may impact compute performance. Compute performance on the GTX 460 may also be impacted by pressure on the registers and L1 cache: NVIDIA increased the number of CUDA cores per SM, but not the size of the Register File or the amount of L1 cache/shared memory, so there are now additional CUDA cores fighting for the same resources. In the worst case scenarios, this can hurt the efficiency of GF104 compared to GF100.
May be that's why GTX 460 have poor performance in Ungine Heaven...

This is a very well welcomed release. Pretty much every site has it winning an editors choice award. It takes a dump on the lawn of the 5830 and the gtx 465. The consumer only gains from this release on both sides.

It really throws an monkey in AMD plans. Basically to competitive the 5830 needs to drop down another 30 dollars. Which in turn would effect 5770 pricing and 5750 pricing. Even the much lauded 5850 might need a price cut.

Besides fazing out the gtx 465, this release is only good for NV which is to be expected.

Sobering however is how long it took to get gtx 280 performance out of a card which in turns shows how disappointing this generation from NV and AMD really is. This is no 8800 gt in its performance. To do that, NV needs to release the 384 shader gtx 475 at clocks of 750 and lunch it for around 269 or better yet 249 which doesnt make sense.

hooray for competition! this is awesome to see power and temps come down but performance staying the same; all for less money. oh yeah, and a card that will fit in most cases again (465 vs 460).
