the $99 i3 Fry's deal, the CoolIT ECO and 4.6g Linx stable and sub-9 superPI 1M

not bad... my first venture into OC since the first Conroe.

Picked up the $99 Fry's i3 530/Biostar TH55B HD combo and they also had the CoolIT ECO el cheapo water cooler on sale for $59. I figured wtf and threw it together with 4gb of Corsair 1600C7.

It's actually going to end up as my new office rig but I had to see what it was capable of.

Went really nice with one exception... once I was at the upper end speed-wise, I had to switch down to the 800 mem divider... the 1066 and 1333 would give problems.

So I ran the CoolIT ECO with 2x 1700rpm fans push/pull in an open sided case. I think it did OK... reached 74* during a half hour Linx run at 1.42v

For the $$... the OC ability is unreal. And a 4758 sPi 1M is nice too at sub 9 sec.

    KT333?

hell yes, I found it. The Abit KX7-333R. And those T-Bred cpu's.... sigh.

I owned like 3 or 4 of them. What an exquisite board.

I remember there for a while AXP prices fell to $30-$40 each and we'd all buy like 3 or 4 at a time...

Those truly WERE the days. An average OC'er could go home and put up some top 10 numbers in his garage... before the semi-pro overclockers tainted, errrr.... nevermind.

I know you young whipper-snapper, LED light in your eyes, fancy case, colored pci slot and ram spreader guys won't appreciate this but THIS is the father of modern overclocking and if you look back to 2002 and who was cranking on the KX7... you'd find the 'Hall of Fame" of great OC'ers for the next 5 years...

I almost want to get one just to hang it on a wall

The age of Athlon?... 2Gflops and 2GB/s mem bandwidth.. At that time was AMD stronger than Intel?

I can only remember when I was a child in 1997 I owned a desktop with P2 233MHz + 32M RAM + 2GB HDD, and in 1999 my father bought me a laptop with AMD K6 333MHz + 64MB RAM + 4GB HDD. At that time I was only trying to figure out how to install Windows 98 and drivers myself, and knew nothing about hardware..

ok, I'm done with this thing... time to retire it to it's role as my office PC. Maybe 4.2gHz@1.3v, 24/7??

Here's my last bench for it... with a lot more voltage.

Youve beaten my SUPER PI 1m score with a i3 only 2 cores gahhh, Im digging a grave for my 930 as we speak

Another thing I find funny is AMD/Intel would snipe any of our Moms on a grocery run if it meant good quarterly results, and you are forever whining about what feser did?

I still remember P4 was called "electric monsters" in my country. Classical "transistor and power" revival way. Pretty much like the nVidia Fermi GTX 480 nowadays.

I'm afraid to try 1C1T with my 980X after I saw the "killing 980X fast" thread...

thanks, yes the P4 were really something back then... the 2.66 ran around $300, the 2.8 around $500 and iirc, the 3.06HT when new was around $800.
You gotta love that 980X... such a beast. Don't kill it for a little single core benchmark!

Man i just overclocked my i7 930 for fun to 4.6 on Air, and i still couldnt get under a 7 on SUPER PI, and that was with HT off.. these i3's are the overclocking kings, considering they only have 2 cores no HT etc... big yes for me..
