Building a Sossaman rig?

ok.. now i'm getting a lil aggro.. I took my rig apart.. made some new HS brackets out of solid copper (instead of acrylic - I figured the acrylic would have an insulative effect).. the temps on one CPU went the lowest I've seen.. the other CPU? well.. it was initially (when I first put the rig together) the cooler of the 2.. its temps shot up to ~95C

my HSs have *never felt hot... I wonder if the temp diode thingy is screwed.. any why to diagnose this?

Again I would suspect that your heatsink isn't square on the die and is lifting up on one side, in this case badly.

It is possible the diode is screwy, of course, but it's rather unlikely.

I just did some.. 'testing'.. I laid the case on its side & took off the Cu brackets - so now the HSs were resting on the CPUs by their weight alone.. & then booted the rig up.. temps were fairly even between the 2 CPUs, which is a first, but both still higher than what u guys are getting.. I then wanted to know which CPU is which in HWM, so I simply tilted the HS of the lower CPU: 55 to 75 C in 2 secs ... I then applied pressure to it (by hand).. negligible change.. I then did the same to the higher CPU, roughly the same pressure..: system freeze. The higher CPU is the CPU that initially had the higher temps.. I have tried *many different levels of HS pressure mounting..

ok, fired her up again.. HSs just resting by weight along, no Cu bracket.. I held the 140mm in place with my hand.. temps were virtually dead even on all 4 cores (~34C).. then WCG kicked in. temps on both CPUs were even & ranged betwee 39-45C.. thats good enough - close enough to what u were getting D_A .. ok so... must be uneven bracket mounting pressure

Just for temp reference, using the aluminum intel abaheatsink things, with indirect airflow from a low-medium speed 120mm fan (some quiet Ultra 120mm fan with no RPM wire) my sossaman temps were mid-40s, high 40s when the room got warm.

Now, they each have their own 80mm fan, really slow ones (NMB fans that pull only .06A and are so quiet they are probably 1200RPM, at most) mounted directly to the heatsinks, they are at 38-39C.

That setup you're using is probably going to be a right bytch to get even since, from memory, there's no springs on the mounts to take up minor variations in mounting pressure.

I've got a set of fans from a couple of 2.4GHz P4s that I'm saving for my next one ... if the chips ever arrive. Same mounts as the ones I'm using now but slightly bigger fans. I think I'll be sticking with the ABB 'sinks though. They're nice and predictable.

yeah. I had a good think about it.. I *finally realise how.. finiky it is to get it even.. today I'll be sussing out a good way to maintain even pressure - I'm thinking a shim might do the trick, tho finding the right material @ a mere 1mm thick is going to prove a wee lil difficult

Go down to your nearest hardware/industrial supplier (if you have a Blackwoods or a Bakers nearby they are perfect) and you can get brass shim in sheets, rolls or in cans (the size of beer cans) containing sheets of varying thickness.

Or you could just cut up aluminium cans with some old scissors.

A set of springs on the mounting screws would probably help even out the pressures and should be available at a hardware place.

got my temps stabilised.. one of the cores even hit an all time low..
my temps are now:

#1: 24-40 C
#2: 27-46 C
#3: 24-35 C
#4: 25-38 C



might be able to help someone out with 2x1GB ram in the near future.. *maybe.. i'll keep posted

what screws to use on 120x25mm fan to mout to oem-xs heatsinks?

I used some from an old socket 7 heatsink. They aren't log enough to go the whole thickness of the fan, but they reach through the lower ear and into the sink just fine.

btw i got that noctua 140mm fan for my sossi lol its so quiet and cools the sinks/ram/chipset yay HUGE!!

bah sossi arent even worth it anymore... could get parts for 4p board easyer and the costs would even out with 1 year of operation costs as the 4p opti isnt quite as carefull with the power usage...

You get a Sammy to say you have one. Mine acts as a file server and crunches WCG. When it comes to crunching, it seems to sit on par with my Athlon II X2 215 @3.2Ghz for output and power consumption, but the sammy was probably $30 cheaper.

$40 isn't a bad price. I bought mine for $25 each, but that was a rare find and not likely to come around soon.
