Cool Silverstone demonstrates new Air Penetrator fan series

    Source: http://www.silverstonetek.com/
    Introduction
Traditional computer fans are made to expel air, so for years, airflow was the most important rating that determines cooling efficiency as most fans are used as exhausts. SilverStone created Air Penetrator fan specifically designed for intake fan applications, where airflow rating is not a priority. The design goal for Air Penetrator is to focus airflow into a column that can be channeled through various obstacles inside the modern computer case for more efficient cooling performance. Compared with traditional fans, where airflow spreads outward and further looses focus with resistance added (e.g. filters, fan guards, etc…), Air Penetrator fan’s unique blade and grille designs can create enough pressure to push air as far as 1 meter away with minimal fan speed and noise. This unmatched efficiency makes Air Penetrator ideal not only as intake case fan, but also perfect for high density heatsinks and radiators.

    Special Feature
    Industry leading air channeling fan.
Wide fan blades for reducing air resistance.
Standard 120mm frame for maximum compatibility with CPU coolers.
Integrated air channeling grille double as fan guard to reduce overall size.
    Low power consumption.
The Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) for high reliability.

    Remark

    Air Penetrator fan demonstration video
    Hm, looks pretty interesting!
Wonder if the grille noticeably reduces airflow, though.

That video pretty much says it all. Pretty cool, wouldn't mind trying a few out and seeing if temps drop any.

good stuff, i wonder how it would do against the Scythe Gentle Typhoons, those are the best fans out now, push alot of air with low noise.

I wonder how these would do as Rad fans?

I'll admit the demo is pretty cool. I wonder if it actually works like they intended, to provide better channeling of air through a case? It was pretty clear the regular fans kind of shot air out in all directions.

anything blocking the fan lowers total flow or pressure. but it doesnt matter when the flow doesn't go where you want it to. thus airflow straighteners. these are not new. example: http://www.frostytech.com/articlevie...articleID=2323

So they ripped off Vornado huh?

I know this design DOES push air forward, I just wonder how the noise will be. I think this'll help rads, especially ones w/o shrouds.

    yeah, vornado copy heh
    who cares, if it works...

but i dont see how this is a new fan, the only new thing i see is a fanshroud/grid added to the fan.
so shouldnt this work with any fan?
these would be great as casefans, but for heatsinks... idk... im not sure how much of a difference a slight correction in air push direction makes there...

    oh and errrr penetrator? really?
    marketing fail... ^^

lol, not so fail. I'd buy one just because it says penetrator... is that wrong?

Notice how the grill is curved in the opposite direction of the fan blades, that's what does the correcting. I assume you could modify any fan like this, given sufficient pressure.

this will make stacking fans in series actually beneficial now! Where's Martin...

Welcome to the party guys , I guess you guys don't follow Silverstone too much, those fans have been out for months and are used in the Fortress FT02 WRI special edition case, very nice case by the way, pickup one awhile back for my new build.

for any FT02 owners, the new SST-AP181 push more air without any extra noise.

check out this link in Japanese

I read somewhere that stacking fans in series only works if the fans are counter rotating, like that 120x76mm Delta GFB1212VHW.

mmm, I guess you miss read the OP"s post, he was talking about the new SST-AP121's and he missed the part that there are also the new SST-AP181's out.

The Raven 02 does not use the new SST-AP181's, is uses the regular 180mm fans http://www.silverstonetek.com/produc...no=FN181&area=
    ( I own a Raven 02 by the way.)

maybe higher static pressure due to basically directing air like a convergent lense. But I doubt they'd be better CFM overall, or better noise. Difficult to say how much it will improve air flow through a heatsink: Airflow on the normal fans tend to diverge after it exits the fan, like case fan scenario. But if the fan is already right next to the heatsink, you might get very similar static pressure anyway...

If the heatsink is designed to take advantage of the way the fan expels air, we could have a good combo here.
    Are we there yet?

I haven't read that, but I heard it from my father before. Makes sense too if you think about the motion of the air. Two fans in the same direction = 1 fan pushing and a second fan chopping up the air. Two fans with opposite rotation = benefit.

this is best used for two fans with relatively high CFM and relatively low static pressure.

i wonder if these will reduce the benefit of a shroud on radiators and therefore reduce some footprint

Silverstone has been making good fans for a good while, and this will hopefully carry the same tradition.

I've get a SilverStone FT01 newly, but it is getting old now. I got really surprised to see how quiet and effective fans it has. Those 2 x 180mm 700RPM pushes a lot of air without making any noise.

The SilverStone FT01 is really little, litle and quiet case, but it has much better cooling than my good old heavy and big CollerMaster 1000 with 5x120 fans.
