Plus I'm sure with all of these boards being purchased, this will be THE resource for asking questions. I'm not new to Linux, just not very good with it. If Linux runs smoothly on it, that works. I've been wanting to get better at it anyways. I'm not afraid of the command line!

I've tried KDE, Gnome and XFCE versions of Ubuntu (you can have all three desktop environments installed on one system and switch between them if you want to) and have pretty much settled on Gnome, but others have varying opinions. That's fine. There are more desktops than just those three if anyone wants to look, but those are the ones Ubuntu can come with pre-setup.

That's the beauty of Linux (or one of the things), you're not tied to a particular desktop environment. In fact, the desktop is really an application running on top of the Operating System, not an inseparable part of it. If you don't like your desktop, just pick another one and change.

I already have four HS/Fs, three brackets, 4gigs of ram inc and I think the PCP&C Silencer 610 I have in a spare machine will do the trick. Now I just need wife to relent on another build in the house. Oh and boards and CPUs.

It's dead in this thread tonight! Will we only have one big order or do we make a preorder to check out the boards and provide instructions to everyone?

I like your thinking here. Maybe order 10 or 20 test boards?

Hi guys, just to help you out a little, here is a search that I use to hunt for cheap (eg. advertised in the wrong category, etc.) registered ECC DDR2 memory on eBay -

    (pc2*,ddr2*,6400,5300,pc6400,pc5300) (ecc,reg*) -(non*,full*,fb*,pc2100*,pc2700*,pc233,pc266)

If you're wondering why I search for ECC or reg*, it's because I prefer to get a few false positives than to miss out on a deal because someone listed ECC reg. as plain ECC, which often happens. The search will unfortunately turn up a few FB-DIMMs aswell, even though I've tried to get rid of as many as I can, as you can see. Let me know if it works out for you!

Thank you for the search key I'm gonna hunt a bit tonight when I get back from school

EDT : You might want to add SO-DIMM to this section : -(non*,full*,fb*,pc2100*,pc2700*,pc233,pc266)

It annoys me when it shows laptop memory

Looks like I will have a dual Arima board (NM460) arriving soon. I'll make it avaliable for component testing once I know it works.

Two chips on the way from palm54@charter.net.

Not a quad socket but should be fun none the less. I'll be out $163 total for 2x quad opterons, board and 4 gigs of ram if everything works out.

Keep us posted on the dual socket please. It looks like those boards are fairly plentiful on ebay.

I already have shipping info, so you might want to try again. He responded pretty quick. Possible your e-mail got caught by a spam filter?

Will do. No idea if these parts are going to play nice together but I'm not out too much if there is an issue. If everything works I think I might could beat a sossman for initial cost/crunching power.
