I really want to see how Xfire 5770s compare to a single 5870 and GTX 480 with Tesselation.

On ATI cards, the tesselator function is fixed on all the HD 5000 cards, which is why the 5800s arent doing so good with it on. Two 5770s have more tesselation power than a single 5870, and the same as a 5970.

This is one strong reason why paying for anything more than a 5850 from the current ATI lineup is a total waste. Regardless of how high the max FPS are without tesselation, once tesselation is being used, the 5870 = a 5770 on the minimum FPS.

Yes... I know it's not a game, but nobody can deny how powerful Fermi is when it comes to levels of tessellation much higher than currently used in retail games.

As a current owner of a GTX285 and former owner of HD4870, I'm definitely going to wait for both companies to refresh their current cards. nV definitely needs to work out its heat and power issues through a refinement of TSMC's process... and I'm sure a more mature .40nm process would be of benefit to ATi and allow for less heat and higher clocks.
From what I understand, nVidia's cards have X amount of "poly-use" units. Those "poly-use" units can be used for a variety of things, including tessellation. In a benchmark like Heaven, which is very heavy on the Tessellation aspect, many of the X number of "poly-use" units can be utilized, for example 70% of them. However, in real-life games (as opposed to the tessellation-oriented Heaven), tessellation is less than 70% of what needs to be put on the screen, so <70%, say for example, only 30% of the "poly-use" units will be dedicated to tessellation. Thus, tessellation performance will be lower than shown in the Heaven benchmark.

ATI's implementation is different. They have a fixed number of units that perform tessellation, so in all scenarios where tessellation is used, performance will generally be the same.

This is my understanding so far. Please fix if incorrect.

Even once nV drivers mature, they are unlikely to offer more than...10% average maximum? so thats still a 10% boost on average for £200 more. Still not a good deal

Yes! Drivers will also lower 4xx power usage to 200w and 10w idle. Also it will be after two driver updates (6 months of driver developement wasnt enough to take care of child diseases) the promised 60% faster. In three months drivers will enable full 512 shaders for 480!

    ......Or not.

Yeah, crossfire always scales. I wouldn't touch crossfire again with a ten foot pole.

Thats like saying if you have a game (of which there are many) that dont benefit from a quad core CPU, you'll never buy a quad core ever again. Nor does Ram scale very well beyond 4 Gb, but you also have 8 Gb of that .

ASUS ROG Matrix HD5870 reaches 1525MHz
ASUS ROG Matrix 5870 finally did it, becoming the first Cypress-based graphics card to pass the magical 1500MHz border. During a bench-session this last weekend, Swedish overclocking masters and SMPC celebrities Marcus "Kinc" Hultin together with Jon "Elmor" Sandström pushed an ASUS, Kinc's employer by the way, Radeon HD5870 way past its stock specifications. The results were really impressive and for the first time, we've seen a graphics circuit running at above 1.5GHz.........

I've never seen the extra cores or ram cause negative scaling, or driver issues. I wasn't impressed with a 4870x2 compared to my GTX280 and I doubt that I would be impressed with a 5970 compared to a 5870. I didn't even bring up heat, power draw, and overclockability. Crossfire doesn't scale well a lot of the time and once you start throwing mods into the mix things get worse.

I will always pay more for a single gpu than for a similar performing (at times) multi gpu setup. The framerate swings are horrible.

Don't mean to sound like a broken record here but when, where, and how much forl this card? I hope they get this card out quick seems these higher end cards get shipped out late in the GPU game after something else better comes along at a cheaper price.
