They would need all of the components....or at least one set or CPUS, RAM and PS....

To Duh : I agree being the memory guy.

I might also look into heatsinks and backplates but I have no experience with amd heatsinks so there is probably somebody here that knows much more about it.

What we need to know about heatsinks is : max budget per HS, and FANLESS vs FAN-ASSISTED

I could be that guy, since the final exams end very soon.

the motherboard in this server is the same as we are buying, there you can gather alot of info of it, i am still waiting on a price on the powersupply from these guys, but he said that shipping is 80$ each, but i will try my hardest to get them to sponsor the shipping for us.. but i am not sure it will happen.

No it's not. Look at the memory slot configuration, as well as the back connectivity (vga, etc).. Different layout but similar function

EDT : Oh man my bad, I thought you were comparing the link in your quote and the ebay link you posted. sorry

Hi All, i recently joined the wcg team for the supercomputer contest, but i am staying.
If that system is reasonable ,

i might be interested in getting one to rock and roll with...

So i will read thru this whole thread, is there any updates as to total cost for MB, ram and chips

are there 4 cores per proc ?

Motherboards : I predict a max of 90$ shipped in the US.
    CPU's : They are 4 cores @ 1.9 ghz, they are 27.5$ each
Memory : 18$/GB, you need 4gb to be reasonably equipped. We might have better deals

I got more pictures and SPECS

Arima AMD Opteron Quad Core Socket F 3000 series

    240 pin DIMM DDR2 Memory Slot with 1.8 V.

With Socket F 1207 Each CPU Has 4 Corresponding Memory Slots (see above)

    1 x PCI Slot 60 pins (11+49)

Second slot has 82 pins (11+71)

    8 x SATA Connections

    2 x SATA Media Connections

    40GCMG020-D400-100

    http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1035075021

By the way, the mem problem is solved : all 8000 series cpu's (BARCELONA) support ONLY up to DDR2 pc5300 (667mhz). Newer SHANGHAI cpu's might not work with the board (I can't tell) but these support up to DDR2 pc6400 (800 mgz)

Some guy named "404 - File not found", ya that's his name, has his rig up and running. He lives in quebec like me so i might have him to help us. Here is his system specs :
    4x 8346HE, AM2 heatsinks, 8gb ddr2 ecc reg, Arima mobo, 88gs, 700W OCZ

    4x AM2 Alpine HS $10ea
    PSU OCZ 700W + adapters $60
Hard drive/ GPU I had laying around

    That's a total of $385!
EDT(16:55) : It DOES work with only ONE cpu.

Wow, I don't read the forums for a month, and look what happens. I'm all about this deal. Do I need to work out boards, cpus, and whatever else separately with different people, or is someone coordinating all that?

BTW, add me to the list, please.

just stay on top of this thread. we've got guys on different parts, sort of either way we just need enough people to make the bulk board buy happen. so just by saying that you want one is more than enough help right now!! thanks!
