    24x7 system 1090T+Crosshair IV (Benches)

Hi all . The last few weeks i have been craving to get my upgrade components . Finally i received them and i immediately replaced my socket 775 system and sold my core2duo cpu . Only 1 problem : I haven't had an AMD system since xp2100+ and sdram , and since A LOT has changed . I've read a lot on the forums gaining basic knowledge of the new AMD phenom systems and DDR3 and got started .

I upgrade my system with the following components :
    - Kingston 1800mhz 8-8-8 DDR3 memory
    - Asus Crosshair IV Formula
    - AMD 1090T Black Edition
    - Xigmatex Thor's Hammer cpu cooler

Then i took a day off from work and woke up early .
After a whole day benchtesting i came up with what for me seem 24/7 stable settings . (witness the screenshots , these are no suicide runs but taken after the system has been proven fully stable)

You can use this as a reference for overclocking , or use it to choose the components to upgrade your old system and see what you can expect .

As stability testers i used mainly LINX (system) and Prime95 Blend (Memory) .
CORE and other C1 energy saving stuff is disabled in the bios .

I found the 0707 asus bios not overwhelming , also i had the luck that i did not have to use any settings which i did not understand
This has been different on older systems in the past where a lot of settings just didn't make sense .
So now the ones i didn't understand i left at auto , and they were fine .

One thing i could use help with is how can i go further with this in terms of CORE functionality . I really welcome ANY tips you have .

Screenshots will all be posted within 30 minutes from now .

Very nice. The x6s should make for some very cost effective folding / encoding machines

Any idea how hot these things can get? 58C at that kind of voltage and frequency seems pretty damn good on air as far as I know. What kind of airflow do you have on that heatsink?

    Very nice. Thanks for posting.

I'm very tempted to pick up a 1090T and CHIV as my current M4A79XTD isn't supported for some reason.

Do you mind running linx with just 1024MB and 5 loops. I'm doing a compilation in this particular bench ;P.

Added benches of winrar and X264 .

@chickenfeed : Max supported temp for X6 chips is 62°C . They run very cool however . Idle temps are equal to ambient temp for me (on the cores) (even without C1E and cool 'n quiet enabled!) . I'm using a PAPST 4412 GT fan PWM controlled silent setting (push) + PAPST 4412 GL (pull) . Keep also in mind that core temperature is not equal to cpu temperature by far .. when core is 28 cpu is 45 .
@Spectrobozo : CORE is disabled as mentioned in the first post . Asus bios doesn't give much options to tweak it as of now . And i don't want amd overdrive to apply any settings at boot .
As far as the x8 PCI-X goes .. i don't know why that is . Don't see an option to change it either . Let's hope once my 5850 goes in , it enables x16 mode !
    @YPQY : you're most welcome
@=[PULSAR]= : if I do i will be jumping over you in RAC ranking
@Nintendork : PM with results sent

@TOOL_CHILE : can you show me your first screen bios settings ?
Also , what problem are you facing with cool 'n quiet ?

Can someone also tell me what is the 62°C max on this chip ? Do they mean this as a maximum temp per core , or is it the maximum temp for the total cpu .

Still optimizing the system as of now .
I'm sure some voltages can go down still but for now i'm interested in activating Cool 'n quiet , C1E and CORE .

C1E and cool 'n quiet can be enabled without issues so it seems .
CORE is a different story .
The bios options for this asus board are pathetic and don't allow any tweaking at all .
So i tried it with amd overdrive , but that's also very flacky .
Finally i think i have found something :
    Boost 1 core to 4375mhz .

This is a superpi 32M with C1E, CORE and cool 'n quiet enabled :

Cinebench first run with CORE enabled (1.31) , second run with CORE disabled was (1.25)

If I can tweak the voltages a bit more i am VERY happy with this system for 24/7 .

Well , it seems that i can enable turbo CORE within windows in ati overdrive without too much hassle . (running superpi 32m and cinbenench with it)
But when i try to load the overdrive profile on windows load my pc bluescreens before my desktop because overdrive wants to activate turbo CORE on 5 cpu's (standard setting). While i only want to activate it on 1 !!
Also wrong CPU VID gets applied (always 1.475V) etc. . Maximum cpu VID is 1.55 . Many bugs ..

I think as of now it's pretty poor implemented , and we need to wait for better bios and/or overdrive support .

    Very nice setup!

I'm also using C'n'Q and Turbo Core with HTT 236MHz.
This gave me Cinebench R11.5 Single 1.28pts
Disabling C'n'Q and Turbo and raising all cores to Turbo multi resulted in Cinebench score of 1.29pts!
I say Turbo works extreeeemly good.
Also my OpenGL score was 75FPS!!!

AMD's max cpu temp rating is based on the Tcase temp, (center of the metal lid) so you want to read the single CPU temp value (like the bios does), for example in AMD's AOD app its usually displayed in Tmpin1.

EDIT AMD Family 10h Desktop Processor Power and Thermal Data Sheet 3.40 4/26/2010

Ok thanks ! I think lots of people are crossing the 62° on their core though without knowing , cause they look at the coretemps only .
Even my cpu (with only 1.41V and 4140mhz on core and 1.25v on cpu-nb) crosses 62° cpu when running lynx . Goes up to 70 even .
In real life apps it doesn't touch 60° though .. but still . While testing for stability (lynx) this means i'm hurting my processor .

Those testing apps put a lot more stress on a CPU then any program I have ever run, see my wattage chart below.

If I had to guess I'd say core temps would have a higher max then the max Tcase rating. The only CPUs I remember that used a core temp rating was the old AMD Socket-A K7s (ThunderBirds, Bartons), they didn't have a metal lid covering the CPU die and AMD used a max die temp rating for those, (is die the same as core?), some were rated at 85C, 95C, I think one was even rated at 105C.

You also can't use the CPU temp in the BIOS as the idle temp, from what I was told the CPU actually has some load on it when in the BIOS so its expected to have a higher temp then say idle in windows.

A quick test on an AMD X4 Phenom @ 3.2GHz.
    Code:
    Status............... Watts at wall
    PSU On/PC Off ....... 1
    BIOS ................ 145
    Windows Idle CnQ on.. 84
    Windows Idle CnQ off. 104
    WCG BOINC 1 WU ...... 122
    WCG BOINC 2 WU ...... 139
    WCG BOINC 3 WU ...... 160
    WCG BOINC 4 WU ...... 176
    Prime95 Only......... 190 (210W peek).
