Exclamation Modded SLK-900 on my 9800XT!! (PICS)

OK i had my slk-900 seating on my desk for about 5 months to brush off the dust and mod it onto my stock 9800 xt card. First i cut off about 5 fins from each side with dremel. Thats about it.

The thing i was contemplating was how to mount it on. After several attempts to zip tie it, Light BULB sprang over my head. I can put the zip tie between the fins and right throw the heatsink into the the 2 holes in the card. Worked perfect.

I added some padding in the back and 2 springs. And i found a xtra 80mm fan from my new lian-li case and zip tied it to the heatsink. The fan from the lian-li case is so quiet.

    Looks nice man. Good job.

Have you noticed any marked improvement in overclocking?

Also, that thing weighs a ton, do you notice any torque in the card near the back where nothing is supporting it?

BTW, are those the OCZ Ram Sinks on that XT as well?

Hi i have the thing at 438core/384mem while using stock heatsink from 9800xt. I havent tried overclocking it yet but when i use to play bf1942 prior to mod i had some snow in gameplay. Now, NO more snow.

I tightened the zip ties with a nose plier, and should be on there prettyy tight. Doesnt move when i push it. And yes those are OCZ ramsinks with a mix of artic silver 5 and artic silver epoxy.

The fan and wire is a temporary solution until i build my new system.

here are the ramsinks with the glue tape scraped off, then sandpapered:

Nice dude! But why did you remove fins? And I really think you should support the card now that you have that slk hanging under it, a friend of mine used a pen from the bottom of the case and up to the molex-corner of the card, fixed it with sealstring.

I'm REALLY surprised you haven't snapped the card in half yet from the AGP slot.

    Looks very nice ,
im suprised to see that the holds since thats heatsink is very heavy.

I did something similar, i modded a Intel pentium stock heatsink of a 2.8C and put it on my r9800pro(432/375 no volt mods yet). I had to cut away some stuff to but just the bottom of the fins to make them fit over the capicitors(dunno how to spell that). Why didn't you do the same, did you do it because of the weight?

im gonna dremel some stuff away (on the bottom)to improve the contact, because of that ennoying shim. You should to cos this way you need way to much thermal compound for contact, there is a risk that you'll crush your core. But it'll boost your overclock.

And i would trust tie-wraps to hold down a cooler that size, why didnt you use bolts(with big rings through ehm so they'll stay on top of the fins)??

LoL thats funny dude..... great mod there with that heavy heatsink. Im surprised your card is still in one peace cuz i know how heavy the slk900 is cuz i have it cooling my 1700xp-2.4ghz and does an awsome job. I have a 9800 pro from hercules and im also using a cpu copper heatsink but its much smaller and lighther then slk..60mm x 60mm and always keeps my gpu under 40c load. My max gpu clock without any artifacts in 2001 nature test is 440mhz but in games like bf i can crank it up to 466 without artifacts.....and with a vmod i did like 490mhz....but no more cuz im a paranoid when comes to vmoding stuff.....so im pretty happy at 440mhz and 371memory.....Anyway.....Great job bud and your work proves that Slk900 is possible to mod on a video card.....

Very nicely done, it looks gr8. Are you satisfied w/ the hold-down method? seems like zipties wouldn't put a lot of pressure on the core.

Very nice, let us know how it does. Some washers on the top might help with getting better pressure. Also you don't have to zip tie the fan, the regular mouning works just fine. I may have to try this as I droped and pulled out one of the scews of the 947 I had on mine.

I would say 30mhz more on core and 20mhz more in mem. Havent had a whole much of time to test yet. I didnt do vmods to it yet. I will upgrade the fan and the mounting after my spring semester classes are over.!

The zip ties are pretty tight on there and and reliable i believe.
