I got in on the eVGA 480 FTW Hydro pre order. I actually had laced 2 orders so I cold SLI but they canned one of my orders just after the pre-sale closed.
But they said it should ship next week. I will be in Dubai till the 1st, but my card should be here for when I get back.

That said, that PCB is awesome and will change the course of human history

The Microcenter here in Houston, Texas has one GTX480 in stock for only $499, down from $559! With a $1200 tax return, it is tempting, but I know I should wait for the cooler, less power hungry refresh (GTX485 ).

How many phase is this vs. the current PCB? Did people that got the current 480 get screwed?

you'll realize eventually what this all means. this board is overbuilt to support what the chip can really do.

So what you are saying is that 480 was designed to use 2, 8pin connectors using only 480-core? Really? Or will this be a LE GTX 480 using a 512-core which needs 2, 8pin connectors?

That's a lot of tantalum caps. Also, isn't more phases inefficient? Surely having more phases is not a win-win situation ...

"designed to use" nobody knows what anything was designed to use. unless you're inside the company you have no idea what they intended. and once the chip is done, that is it. the board gets designed based on what the chip does, not what they intended.

what I'm saying is this. gtx 480 is a 250-300w board. immediately that tells you either nvidia hit their target perfectly (producing a chip that JUST bumps up against the max pci express power standard) ...or... they over-shot and the chip can do more.

early overclocking results indicate the chip and the board can do more. which means the board is probably running beyond spec to support the capability of the overclocked chip. therefore if you build a better board, the chip may overclock even more.

this has now gone from theory to fact because somebody out there is building a better board.

nvidia completely over-shot the standards with this chip. it is way too fast for nvidia's own good. and now only enthusiasts will see what it can really do, because only enthusiasts have the power and cooling margins to run beyond spec.

and if I'm right, the cut down GF100 derivatives will rule face. they will run as fast as they can run, and they will be more power and cost efficient for gaming because they will have not been designed with the same proportion of non-gaming transistors as GF100.

So in other words, they have a board that allows for more power consumption. Got it.

If this is really the case wonder what that means for a 512core version of the card. I really do hope we will see a 485 with all the cores but if they are hitting the limits of the PCB we would have to wait for nvidia to relase a PCB that could handle the extra load. Upside is that my FTW's will not be outdate so quickly.

that is not how this works. that is like asking for a 32nm i7 without video. just because they could do it doesn't mean they will.

there is no 512 core GF100 geforce and there may never be. there are ample reasons why, and the pcb has nothing to do with it. the 480 version is already fast enough, already uses enough power, already hot enough, and the 512 version adds extra value to tesla. the decision to hold back features happens all the time in business, if this is your first time learning this lesson, learn it quick

Well the 512 cores would allow them to add extra performance with the existing design to say ahead performance wise long as they can get the yeilds high enough. I don't care about heat as I am WCing them anyway.

Is it set to replace the current 480 at the same price point, or is this a specialty board with a higher cost?

Hmm one of my guys at work Speaks and reads chinese so I will need him to do some looking into the board for me. I hate translated pages as they screw up so much and most menus are now images or flash.

This could work out for the best could mean a larger lower rpm fan on the front side.
