Not a single GTX 470 or 480 came in stock in the UK today.
It's pretty silly, indeed.
There are more of us, we just don't shout (well, usually)
Good for you
We (Sweden) supposedly have 40+ of the 480 and ~25 of the 470 available online, pretty much all of them at a single online retailer (Inet). Komplett.se (which is pretty big, as far as I know), has a notice on their site which claims stock will be in at May 1st from some brands and June 1st from others![]()
Main Rig: Phenom II X6 1055T 95W @3562 (285x12.5) MHz, Corsair XMS2 DDR2 (2x2GB), Gigabyte HD7970 OC (1000 MHz) 3GB, ASUS M3A78-EM,
Corsair F60 60 GB SSD + various HDDs, Corsair HX650 (3.3V/20A, 5V/20A, 12V/54A), Antec P180 Mini
Notebook: HP ProBook 6465b w/ A6-3410MX and 8GB DDR3 1600
Yay team charlie. Another point for them?
Evga and Gigabyte 480s @ Newegg sold out in a few minutes

WOW. Why is everyone all excited about the lack of availability. This card has been 2 years(more??) in the making. It has taken so long I figured it'll be out when it comes out. So now you got all the geeks around the WORLD wanting the newest card. Why? Because they've had the "newest" nVidia card for a year or more. They've been waiting for an upgrade, and it's here. There's no surprise in my mind that supply would be extremely limited until all the geeks with big bucks buy theirs.
I also read a comment about the GPU exceeding 100C while doing benchmarks and stuff. About 7-10 years ago nVidia did some research around silicon at high temps. If you can run the processors at high temps(allegedly up to 150C), you can dump more heat per cubic foot of air based on heat transfer equations. If I remember correctly nVidia successfully made some processors and provided some engineering samples to a few companies. The problem: the heat would rise off the GPU and would cause the insulation on the wiring for the molex connectors to melt off causing shorts to ground and shorts between rails. Rumor has it that's a bad thing to do to your PSU. Anyway, I believe they never marketed the product and chose instead to incorporate the technology into GPUs at a later date. Perhaps the time has come that they have incorporated that technology?
I'm not sure how I feel about having a component in my computer running so hot that water could boil off of it. I do know that the water cooled xtremegeeks in the forum will have a little problem if steam begins forming in their tubes.![]()
My eVGA GTX 470 just came in a few hours ago...
(UPS snippet stolen from another guy on eVGA forums because I thought it was humorous)
My eVGA GTX 470 arrived from newegg today... a day early. I installed the 197.41 drivers from nvidia's site and the eVGA precision tool from the driver disc, and away I went... first I tried plopping the core @ 740, and RAM @ 1950 (3900) but the artifact scanner in the furmark-like "eVGA OC tester" tool showed errors as well as there being an occasional line I could see appear for a split-second. So, I dropped the clocks down a lot at a time and found this setting to be stable very quickly. I have gamed with it for about 2 hours now.
(Initial overclock, core has more room, memory has a little left in it)
What is very interesting is the fan noise and temps: fan noise @ 70% is not loud at all, just air whooshing at a dull tone, no "whine" or whirring. It is perfectly comfortable to me, whereas a 5870 at above 38% began to emit a whirr, and eventually a hairdryer-like noise @ 70%+ speed. Now, the big surprise here for me was, that the temperatures are nowhere near as high in my system as they are in the reviews... take a look at the data I took from GPU-Z 0.42 and eVGA Precision in my notes:
NFS Shift peak temp: 76c
BFBC2 peak temp: 80c
SF4 peak temp: 72c
This is with the overclock in the picture and fan speed shown. Again, the fan is very unobtrusive noise-wise inside my case (Coolermaster RC690). Idle temperature is 35c after letting it sit for around 25 minutes websurfing.

Anyway, onto the actual performance...
TEST SETUP:
Intel i7 920 HT on, 3.72ghz
6GB DDR3 @ 8-8-8-2T timings, 1560mhz
nVidia GTX470 1280MB/ATI Radeon 5870 1GB
256GB Crucial M225-series SSD (Indilinx barefoot controller with samsung nand)
Dell 3007WFP-HC 2560x1600 LCD monitor
-----
5870 Clocks (for NFS shift #'s) was 925c/4900m (9.11 drivers back then), for BFBC2/SF4 they were stock (850/1200) with 10.2 drivers
GTX 470 Clocks: 704c/1408s/3504m, 197.41 drivers
NEED FOR SPEED SHIFT:
2560x1600, 8x AA, 16x AF, transparency multisampling, max options, several laps of Ambush Canyon, DX10
GTX470 OC'd: 53min, 64avg
5870 OC'd @ launch: 32-35min, 50avg
Street Fighter 4:
2560x1600, 8x AA, 16x AF, transparency multisampling, max options w/ ink filter, in-game bench
GTX470 OC'd: 148.2fps avg
5870 stock: 124.4fps avg
Battlefield Bad Company 2:
2560x1600, 4x AA, 16x AF, transparency multisampling, max options w/ HBAO enabled, DX11, Port Valdez "Rush" mode (full game)
GTX470 OC'd: 37min, 52avg
5870 Stock: 25min, 41avg
-------
I'm surprised to say the least, primarily with the minimum FPS #'s. These are the main games I played that I had documented my framerates on well while I owned my 5870... so they are the ones I'm using to compare. The averages aren't terribly impressive for a mediumly-OC'd card vs. the 5870, in my opinion, in BFBC2/SF4, but the minimums very much took me off-guard. NFS Shift and BFBC2 saw large min. FPS gains in my system, while SF4 runs internally at 60fps and performs 100% ideally on either card.
I'm wondering if the retail boards have some sort of difference in the cooling, because the whole fan-noise and temperature thing is an entirely different picture in my system than *any* of the reviews I saw. I'll be testing Dirt 2 later tonight, but I don't have any actual data written down except for a few #'s off the starter track... so that's not really a comprehensive test by a longshot but I can see if it's roughly the same, a bit better, or a bit worse.
thanks for the review golden tiger!
i get the feeling the difference between review temps and noise vs. real world testing has to do with the case. mainly the cards like to be in one, i understand that most review benching happens on an open platform which is not good for vga cooling.
The temps and cooler noises are reported to be lower than reviews in other forums as well.

My 470 will hopefully ship out from Fry's on Wednesday, UPS 2 Day Air FTW.
Thanks for the info GoldenTiger! It is looking like these cards are shaping up to be better competition against the HD5800s than the reviews said.
Nice results tiger. Have to keep telling myself that it's a 470. Seems like these cards may just take time to shine, just as ATI's 4870 did.
Here is my GTX480 Vantage Extreme score:
My 480 is running at 800/1600/4000, i7 @ stock 2.67GHz, memory at DDR3 1066.
How is it? PhysX is disabled.
Any other benchmarks I should post?

Yes please make some benchmark in FPS for which ever game you can do. I ordered my 480GTX and recieve a confirmation i shall get mine within a week or so.
Just want to add that i have read so many reviews/fermi threads/all over the Internet and remembered that my 8800GTS SLI was said to reach a certain FPS rate which when i installed it was 10FPS over expectation with a lower end CPU compared to all the test in reviews.
I can tell you right now that all the reviews which ever they are from are all in conflict of interestfor whatever reason that i won't start mentioning here.
The higer minimum FPS is a big + and the lower temp expectation is another one![]()
nice to see some scores, thx for the review goldentiger!
there are only very few cards though it seems... i wonder how many newegg sold...
everytime i check they are out of stock, and there are only 12 customer reviews for a gtx480 and 5 for a gtx470...
thats 17 reviews... and out of those 4 people didnt actually buy the card, at least not from newegg (still wonder why newegg even allows product reviews from random people) so 13 propper buyer reviews...
they are all positive... but the low number plus constant "out of stock" everywhere sounds like the rumors about bad availability were true...
no wonder even jensen said it wont REALLY launch until H2 2010...
but actually all of you guys were able to get one, right?
or is there anybody who tried to get one and couldnt?
is it possible to pre-order one and get it as soon as newegg has stock again for a few minutes?
or do you only get notified and have to quickly go online and order it asap?
EDIT: for anybody who doesnt care about DX11, cant order a 480 or doesnt want to spend the money:

Except the ATI card was either using ancient drivers, or was an OC vs. non-OC comparison still not using the latest drivers which brought a big performance boost to one of the games (even with that OC--basically not quite a GTX 480--a stock 5870 wins in BC2 when using 10.3)
I wasn't going to say anything, but your post changed my mind :P
Sayaa the only way to get one right now it to pre-order it and pay in advance using credit card and be approved prior to shipping.
Regards
All review i read was 5870 OC vs stock 480GTX and with recent driver for ATI. And i read alot pretty much everything i could read about it and i can tell you that there is a way to cool the card without going WC on air and there is core disable via bios and it as a higher min FPS and the load temp are not highly different from each other.
So everything points out ot be a very good card, thought still pricy.
BTW does the benchmark took the glitch of the 10.3 in consideration ?

Core i7 920@ 4.66ghz(H2O)
6gb OCZ platinum
4870x2 + 4890 in Trifire
2*640 WD Blacks
750GB Seagate.
I think both are pretty much useless for OCing (at least for ordinary use). I know this is xtremesystems and all, but 5870's tend to become far less stable when OCed (increased occurance of random grey screens of death) and while that might be fine for a benching run and it might even pass a stress test, I have my 5870 to default clocks for that reason. Maybe others are more lucky, but I've heard many stories of otherwise fine 5870 OCs being affected. And GTX 480? Seems like it OCes fine, but at what cost? The amount of heat and noise (mostly noise) that thing must put out when OCed *has* to make for a less satisfying gaming experience -- I know I don't want to hear fans ramping all the way up when I'm gaming. Now watercooling... that could be a different story altogether.
