Elisha were you using AI Servo Tracking? if so how well did it track the swinging back and forth?

Yeah AI-Servo but the parameters was not for forward movement. It was set more for BIF or horizontal movement so it's OOF a little.
But at f/2, and at such close distance, it's hard to predict the outcome!

what setting are you saying sets AI Servo for vertical vs. horizontal?

I don't quite remember the setting at the moment there there is a link explaining how to set up the Custom Functions based on the type of tracking you want.
I'll see if I can find it.

ya there is a custom function which allows you to separate horizontal/vertical completely.
this goes for the type of AF, memorized AF points, display overlays, and more.

Also there is a link in that article for the Custom Functions which apply for the 7D. Since both 7D and 1DIV use the same Ai-Servo tracking.

I used single point focus on that shot, Assisted point would have yielded better results.

The 7D is not a noob friendly camera when it comes to AI-Servo.
Unfortunately people had to wait until the Mark IV settings came out to figure out what they were doing wrong!

there are not vert/horiz Ai Servo settions guys.

the one and only Vert/Horiz setting for the entire camera is for AF Point selection and that has absolutely no bearing on AI Servo unless you choose C.Fn III-12 and unlink the focal points so they are different when the camera is horizontal or when you turn it to be vertical..
the AI Servo doesnt care which way the object is moving, its up to you to move the camera with the object be it sideways or up or down.

if there was a setting for this then guys who take shots at the auto races would be completely screwed.
Aiservo can only track what you show it to, that that takes you moving the camera with the subject. 0 i know you know this, thats why i am confused as to why you think AI Servo has some setting for Vert. or horizontal movement.

you can check the manual and watch the Canon Learning Center videos on AI Servo, nothing mentions any different way AI Servo works for Vert or Horizontal.
its all about the focus points you setup in the view finder and how you track the object

and dont think Assist will be better, i have found assist to be... odd... most of the times it will focus on the center point, but when it cant, it will actually jump focus to one of the 4 assist focal points, thus completely missing your main center focal point.


i hate to say it guys but i have neither heard of nor read anything, anywhere that Vert. or Hosizontal AI Servo is handled differently in the camera.

I never said anything about vertical. BIF is normally horizontal. The other one is tracking something moving towards you. Not sure what that is called. It's the setting you use for a runner running towards you!

well i never said anything about servo, myself i played with the different types of AF and memorized point for both horiz and vert.
i also found out that there are two verticals, try tilting the camera in both vertical directions, they save their setting separate from each other.

edit: Elisha, I will definitely be finding what AF type I like best for running. I time track and cross county meets, I am probably at like 50 meets a year or something crazy like that, so I have plenty of time to find what is best. I've got a meet this saturday and I can finally put 8FPS to real use!

this is what i was getting at, and Rip's comment.
forward movement, side movement.
AI Servo has no setting to allow betting tracking of either movement its all about you tracking the subject and letting the camera do the rest.
only the speed at which it tracks, and the AF Area of which it is tracking.
the cameras predictive tracking helps,,, or so i've read.
i think my 40D was slower to track but i trily truly never used it much and never with a fast lens, also though it doesnt take a fast lens to use AI Servo since most lenses only need to adjust a little bit to track.

i may have misunderstood your true meaning but taking the words as i read them, i took both you and ripken as implying there was a setting.

BIF isnt a big thing in terms of settings, its all about can YOU track the birds... and cn the camera keep up.
the only setting i find of any use is the Speed. and yes, Slow is better as Fast can and will jump around and you will loose the bird. slow alows it to have a better chance of staying on the bird and not falling off and focusing on something else.

tracking priority or drive priority... eh,, i have found both work its just different for each scenerio.

my apologies if i took your words wrong, i thought you were implying something else.

from my experience, and yes its with a fooked up camera, i would never be able to track a car, even at 25mph coming directly at me. nothing i have tried to track has ever worked.... not on the 7D.. i cant even track, very well, my kid WALKING in the living room
on the 40D i was able to track, from quite a long distance a very fast bird with my crappy old Tamron 28-200 turd lens at full zoom.

again, another reason for me to get a GOOD 7D in my hands i guess.

its not a brand issue, its a camera model issue.
as i've said many times i hate myself to this very moment for selling mt 40D, i should have never done it, i shoudl have just put better glass on it.

and the Nikon AI Servo is not as good from the videos i have watched, albeit, its probably marginal.
but anything is better than what i am dealing with right now right? HA!

if the 7D would allow us to use s split prism view finder... prism,, lol i would probably buy one and just use my M42 lenses as they are just beautiful lenses and i'd just mnual focus everything.

all i was trying to say is that there is a setting which allows you to separate some settings on your horiz and vert.
the things that i am positive about that you can have different is the AF type and your memorized AF point.
and that there are three different rotation profiles as far as i can tell, one for horiz and two verticals

Dunno, but this seems as focusing split prism screen.. not sure about quality and such ofc. Its bit harder to switch screens on 7D than other camera, but not much.

How do you guys reccomend cleaning my d40x inside the body? All my pics have a few green/blue pixils in the same spots, and I see a few specs of dust inside the body on the glass, I don't want to touch it and make it worse or better yet scratch it or anything.

Any suggestions?

You might try a quick blast or air from a can of air, or a dry turkey baster. I took my Canon to a shop to get a spot off, and that's what he did.

No, never use canned air on the mirror or sensor since it will most likely leave residue! Use a rocket blower and sensor swabs for cleaning.

Yeah don't used compressed air. It has too much pressure that it will push dirt into your OVF.
I made that mistake with my first a300. next thing i know, I had black specks in the OVF I couldn't do anything about.
