I remember when the 5870 first came out, there were a truckload of people crying: "WTF 1GB ONLY?!?! WTF WE WANT 2GB!!!! OMFGZZZZ MEMORY BOTTLENECK OMFG!!!!"
has anyone properly done a test of 1GB vs 2GB 5870s on a modded crysis with texture packs included?
its about future proofing, the idea that my 1GB card will last forever means we hit a very nice brick wall in technology, which i pray is not the case. i dont plan to spend 400-500$ on a card i will only keep for 1 year. but if an extra 50$ of memory makes it last 3 years, thats a pretty good upgrade. and can you imagine how much memory will be standard in 2012, or how games will be able to utilize it?
Stock clocks dont really matter on Asus cards as overclocking is covered by the warranty anyway, and they offer voltage tweak and unlocked OC limits, whereas other brands dont (except MSI).
Many of the DX11 titles currently available were developed using ATi hardware and capabilities since nVidia was just a little late to the party. In upcoming games you'll be sure to see much higher levels of tessellation available in game settings which Fermi cards can utilize to greatly enhance image quality while keeping playable frame rates.
Yes... I know it's not a game, but nobody can deny how powerful Fermi is when it comes to levels of tessellation much higher than currently used in retail games.
As a current owner of a GTX285 and former owner of HD4870, I'm definitely going to wait for both companies to refresh their current cards. nV definitely needs to work out its heat and power issues through a refinement of TSMC's process... and I'm sure a more mature .40nm process would be of benefit to ATi and allow for less heat and higher clocks.
