how do you define broken then? there is spare logic in almost every chip nowadays, and its broken in quite some... yet the chip remains fully functional. so is that broken or not? and who says the gtx480 chips with 480 sps are broken? its very likely that the sps on at least some of them are fully functional, they just run too hot or require too high volts to clock high, or they clock really low no matter how much volts you feed them... would you prefer a chip with all sps enabled but much lower clocks and even higher tdps? when it comes to asics there isnt really fully functional and broken, theres no hard seperation between the two...
imo broken for an asic refers to logic errors, ie the logic doesnt process data properly in some scenarios... thats broken... a chip with disabled units is not broken... it has A broken block or A block that performs below specs, but its not broken... and most chips these days are sold with at least some logic disabled in their volume skus, and not because they are broken, but because mfcs want to differentiate their skus from one another. most entry level and mainstream chips have cache, cores or some extra logic disabled, even thought it works fine. are those broken as well?
dont think too much about this, in the end, it doesnt matter anyways...
well, not to us... it matters for analysts and for nvidia themselves, cause it means less highend parts and lower asps...
and its not like ati COULD produce such a massive chip with good yields and nvidia cant... just take it for what it is, and judge it for what it is... who cares if it has 1024 sps and half are disabled? if you cant enable them, then what difference does it make... whether they are broken, or just disabled for some other reason... whats the difference?
whats up with those wild tdp rumors?
nvidia spreading bs again to confuse everybody?
the 480s tdp is rumored to be between 225W to 300W
the 470s tdp is rumored to be between 215W to 250W
or maybe the 300W figure is for the 480 ultra with everything enabled and the 250W is for the 480 sp one?
and still no new benchmarks of the 480?
its less than a week to the launch...
