I was hoping that you would say that. I'm sure the extra daylight that we have been getting really helps!

Not anywhere near close to Martin's shots, but it's a start.

White balance is off, I really need to start shooting in RAW and buy a copy of Photoshop.

    Edit: Updated with tweaked images.

Always shoot in RAW always, never like the camera to pick what it thinks.

Pick up photoshop elements, great and cheap and the newer versions have many of the great features of it's big brother CS4.

Thanks for the tips! I actually dug out a copy of Elements today (Elements 2, from 2002 ) although I plan on buying a copy of Ps CS5 when it somes out.

I also built a lightbox today, so that has really allowed me to control the lighting more and shoot at night. I wish I had done this in January, when it was dark after 5.

Here's what a better setup and a few minutes in Elements did:

If you want good pictures. Using a camera tripod is a HUGE difference I notice as well. :-) Keep the awesome pictures coming!

Thanks! Yes, in the last two pics I was using a tripod. It really helped sharpen the image, especially since I had a long exposure (1/13).

Thanks Martin, it means a lot coming from you. I went back and tried to get a closer-up picture, but the kit lens was not able to focus correctly. I really should get a macro lens.

I went back into Ps and cropped and resized the image, instead of simply cropping it. Is this what you were looking for?

    @Crys1s_Gam3 and H20.

What the heck kind of cameras are you using? Those shots are fantastic! I have an Canon EOS Rebel T1i

Do ya'll have some better len's or something? Or is it you just know what you're doing?

Now i heard that crys1s gamer was using defused day light and not a studio setup at all. What exactly do you mean by that?

I'm using the Olympus SP-590UZ (non DSLR). I plan on getting the Canon T1i/T2i and a nice macro lens, once I get the funds.

Defused daylight = non direct sunlight, ie shadow (as far as I'm concerned). I put the camera on my flexible mini-tripod, set it to wait 2 seconds to take a picture, then stand in front of it so that I cast a shadow on the object. This ensures there are no harsh shadows.

    ahh, i see.

What are your ISO/ white balance/ exposure settings usually at?

    You've definitely perfected those shots!

    Thank you

    ISO 64
Shutter speed: 1/2" (I overexpose a little to make the white BG paper more "even")
White balance set by pointing at blank white paper, but "diffused daylight" is about 6500K (thanks Nils )

Thanks Nils. I always dreamed of being able to take good photographs, but I never thought that I would accomplish it.

Thanks. I am using the same camera as you - Eos Rebel T1i with the kit lens. No special lenses or studio setups for me either, just careful planning and lots of experimenting. If you are a beginer,I recommend getting the T1i/500D For Dummies book - it really helped me learn about the camera and SLR photography in general.
    Regards,
    Chris

you already got a good camera, all you need to do to make those nice photos you see here is to control the amount of light that hits your subject. either you add more light to it if it's too dark or diffuse it to get soft flattering light if it's too bright or harsh (like a direct sun light). window lighting is what you call diffused daylight.

lens doesn't matter, your kit lens would do.
