Twin Turbo Pro installed on my 5850

Heres our victim: A power Color 5850



Heres the back, where i have to remove the screws to seperate the the board from the reference cooler.



all seperated, you can see where the cooler hits the GPU and where the thermal pads are:




Here you can see i need to remove about 8 screws(more on that in a minute), so I can seperate that black metal plate from the rest of the junk, so i can reinstall it.




Heres the GPU all cleaned of its cheap goop. All shiny!


Heres everything separated (and if you notice on the bottom piece, i broke it, 2 screws would not come out, and the plastic actually broke as i was trying to get them out! This cooler better work now! ) Its only a $300 video card, no biggie

i cant run the reference fan past 40% because it sounds like a jet engine. This cooler, I can run at 100, and you cant hear it at all! Its silent!

Now on to the quick stats:

Reference cooler at fan 40%

stock is 725/1000 Volts 1.08

I stopped at 850/1170 temps GPU/vrms were 62C/71C (100% load)thats about as comfortable as i was willing to get.

With the Turbo Pro temps went to 46C/68C

quick test I OCed to 925/1200 and it was 51c/72c.

loving it. Better cooling on GPU, it keep the vrms as cool (most aftermarket coolers are having a hard time keeping the mem cool without the stock baseplate) as the reference cooler, and silent!

ok final stats on my last OC. This is probably where i stop, where im not real comfortable exceeding these temps.

final OC was:

Volts = 1.225
GPU = 960
mem = 1250

Passed 100% load test for 20 minutes, no errors.

temps:

GPU: settled in after about 2 minutes, and didnt change much the rest of the way too:

GPU 1: 58 C
GPU 2: 72 C
GPU 3: 68C

VRMS:

VRM 1:74C
VRM 2:78C
VRM 3:76C

i know they can handle a little more temps, and i can get more out of it, but im happy with the OC, those temps, and the silence!

For the record, just as I had put on EOCF, this does NOT WORK. The heatpipes hit the baseplate and prop the cooler up on an angle. If you're using the stock thermal paste - it is really thick - it will probably still work, but if you use a thin layer of AS5 (like me), it will not. Had to dremel out 3-4mm on the heatpipe side of the baseplate for it to fit correctly.

I didn't mean dremel the heatpipe, you have to shave off 3-4mm off the baseplate from the stock cooler in order for the heatpipes to not sit on it.

Good post, for the 5870 http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=247143, you cannot reuse the baseplate, it's built into the upper shroud.

On the 5850, you can reuse the baseplate like you did and it probably has better cooling and surface area overall for the VRMs. The issues are the baseplate hitting the heatpipe and the fins hitting the DVI cover which acts as a faraday cage so I would not remove it as I have seen some people do. Better to modify the cooler than the card.

1. Those temps are from running furmark.
2. I cut the fins they are quite clear of the DVI, very easy took about 5 minutes.
3. Speak for yourself Kain. Ive had no problems. As you can see in the pics, my heatpipes DONT TOUCH THE STOCK PLATE. I did not have to dremel it or mod it in anyway. I get great temps and amazing OC. I have no idea why your having your issues, but its not an issue on my powercolor, or on any other person ive seen do this. You seem to be the only one having the issue. Ive seen it done at least 5-6 times with no mention of that issue, in fact the 2 others I emailed also said their pipes clear the stock cooling plate just fine.

Yes the non pro fits as well, in fact I have 2 5850 cards and both of them have that cooler installed, it will be a 3-slot solution lol, but since I have a Classified I don't care

As you can see I shortened a couple of fins so that they wouldn't interfere with the backplate piece that sticks out at the back.

I think it's obvious that I did the top one first, I didn't handle it as carefully as you may see near the power cable, broke the plastic of the fan holder but I don't care, for 24 euro per cooler I'm pretty happy

I simply used the backplates again and put a little bit of MX-2 on the VDDC chips of the cards, I didn't take the thermal pads off the plates, just left them stock and put them back on
I have yet to see both cards exceed temps of 63c

What confuses me a bit is why AC chose to put different stickers on the same coolers lol... and I got the extra long crossfire bridges from eBay

Anyway, the highest I have seen on the VDDC chips is 64c and that is with both 5850 cards @ 1000MHz GPU speed with 1.299v and 1250 on the memory

I must say though, I have this Antec Big Boy 200mm fan that runs @ full speed, which I believe is 800 rpm, and it blows directly into the case

For those who wonder, it's a Corsair 800D chassis with 2 Quad rads (XSPC RX480) in the bottom providing cooling for the CPU, yeah I know it's overkill... screw it

dude was this worth doing? did you manage to get higgher more stable oc from the cards? give us some feedback on the results of fitting these please as im trying to decide if i wana go down this route too :O

Of course it was worth it, have you ever bumped the stock cooler to >40% fan speed?
I don't know if my OC improved, but the temps have for sure, that's what matters right?

lol yeh the noise is rediculas on the stock fans but as i have a true 120 and a 200cfm delta fan attached tbh i dont even hear the gpu fans lol! i just put on my headset and play bc2, after that all u hear is gunfire! :P

and yes temps keeping down is what im after also, especially on 1 card its getting way to hot! can you tell me how much they keep the temps down please? i.e temps at full load with stock coolers and temps after you fitted your coolers

Well temps are in my previous post, but with the stock cooler I saw temps of 80+ on both cards, the VDDC chips didn't get like 100 like other people or so, more or less the same as now, between 60 and 70

Just keep in mind that I DO have a 200mm fan blowing at the cards all the time... that definitely helps too I reckon
