now that I think of it I think I was really cheap with the AC5.....I may have to apply more. when I adjusted the heatsink all I did was slide it a bit to center it on the cpu but I didnt take the clamp or lift the hs

For validation only I can prolly get it at 4.2ghz @ 1.47v but I will test tomorrow.

Thank you so much everyone. i have been struggling getting my 965 stable and it was running sooo hot. i am no where near capable at overclocking and i have been progressing slowly. i spent 2 days overclocking and i only increase it to 3.6 stable and i was convinced i had the worst dud (it was running at 65degrees celcius and load with a great heatsink). I started realising it was my own fault when amd overclock did a half stable (2hours) overclock at 3.9ghz.

I was convinced i had to work out why i was so incapable of overclocking and i finally found this thread. THANK YOU to all

btw - all i did differently was bump all my voltages up by the smallest increment, put vcore at 1.55/1.6 (havent decided yet, its stable at 1.6 havent tried 1.55 yet). and increase my ht link to 2200, and my nb to 2600 and slack of my timings a little bit and everything is great.

p.s. i did all that in one attempt and its running stable... i dont know whether i should be greedy and try to push it further.

    here are my details

    cpu multiplier - 19.5
    FSB 205
    HT link 2255
    NB - 2459

ram .1v up, nb .1 up and sb .1 up, cpu nb VID @1.3 volts

Hi there, im not use to have decent parts because ive always been a budget person (student - broke), now i have finished uni i have spare cash and upgraded my system to all decent parts. so i dont really know where to stop

should i try to push it further? considering this is my first attempt and it was stable and i always read that people have to keep pushing so that it crashes and then go down a bit so its stable. while all i did was guess what would be good and it worked perfectly. so should i push it further, and if so what should i be pushing, my multiplier, my fsb? and should i try to push my nb and ht frequencies further if i notice any instability. also is it imperative to keep my ram timings loosened. i memtested (2passes) it perfect at 8-8-8-21 but it is running at 9-9-9-24 atm.

I say put fsb at 200 and up the cpu multi to20.5 and see how it does??......your voltage is already high enought to run 4.1-4.3ghz.......depending how good the cpu is. leave memory like that till you find the sweet spot for the cpu and nb.

One thing I see you did not move cpu voltage at small increments......you jumped all the way to max safe voltage for the cpu.

    Small increments looks lkike this

    1.4
    1.425
    1.45
    1.475
    1.5
    1.525
    1.55
    1.575 (what I use for 4.2ghz) watercooled

you already at high voltage what is the temperature of the cpu? keep it under 50c for best results.

I've read you can squeeze more out of the cpu by not relying on the multiplier. but i will try your suggestion. i am not 100 percent sure how i am supposed to find the sweet spot of my cpu and nb.

i've got prime95 running at the moment and its running at 58 degrees. the max is 65 so thats pretty good right? do you mean less then 50c on load or idle. because there is no chance of having it less then 50c because (if i can remember correctly), it sits at 48 degrees at stock load.

edit - do i leave the HT Link at 2200?

i put fsb to 200, left ht at 2200, nb at 2600 and multiplier at 20.5 and it loaded but failed after a minute of prime95

I mean load......it all depends on how high you going to try to go. Im watercooled and my cpu does not go higher than 50c at 1.57v.......once it starts to go higher then I get instability.......but I speak from my system......yours may be different. All you can do is test and see not everybody will get the same results.

What I usually do is find the sweet spot for the cpu with the multi then start raising the NB multi to find the highest you can go (2.6ghz-2.8ghz NB) and try to get it stable both together.

Once you know that info you can always lower the multi and use the fsb to reach the same speeds. Im not a fsb overclocker I use multi for everything and it hasnt steer me wrong but you do what you feel more comfortable with.

thing is raising the fsb you have to watch everything at once memory, nb, cpu, htt, unless you go in and lower the multis on all those settings.

More easy to raise the multi on the cpu then raise the multi on the nb then tweak your memry speed and timings!

well i think i have reached the limit. 20 is my highest multiplier, and 210 fsb crashes, 205 seems to be working good. so mine may only be able to get to 4.1

p.s. if i have the voltage too high will it cause instability or just heat?

it will cause both..........did you see how high you could go with stock voltage? look at how I started this thread.......go as high as a could with stock until I needed to raise it up.

Think I'm going to grab one of these and do a major upgrade from my current system. Currently running an Opteron 165 on a DFI NF4, 1GB of OCZ RAM, etc.
Will my OCZ Powerstream 520W still hold up with this bad boy?
