The chart is misleading all the same, because it's using 3 1920x1080 monitors in Eyefinity.

At normal resolutions, the 2GB part won't offer nowhere near as much of a performance increase..
Actually the chart is missleading because of the titles displayed only UT3 is more or less playable with one 5870 2GB vs 5870 1GB, while all the other titles the FPS drop to floor-level (jezzz, Crysis at 5760x1080 AAx4 with one 5870 Yay the 2GB version part is better, so what? 5fps vs 9fps?

If they had shown a tri or quad-CF comparing 1GB vs 2GB then that chart would make sense at all, it doesn't need rocket science to realize that you need a lot of muscle to really use 2GB of memory...

They can use a much cheaper pcb with lower tolerences at 900mhz.

Yes what was the point in closing thread N1, if thread N2 carries the same amount of BS?...
Though using search function may save you time from repeating the same BS that has been posted before or in finding the right info.

Maybe its like HD4870 - back when they didn't have all the error checking and correction features working yet.

Or perhaps nVidia is having similar GDDR5 "training" growing pains.

Besides, AMD invented it and thus used it longer. Why would you expect nVidia to become GDDR5-guru overnight?

On the flip side though, GTX480 is at least 6 months newer than HD5870. nVidia may have sourced some Samsung 6Gb or even 7Gb chips.

300GB/s is a nice round number, dont you think?

nvidia has had cards with ggdr5 for months. they might be guying lower binned memory to save costs. they might be waiting for 2Gb IC's. AMD didnt invent gddr5, they helped make the standard and had some say in what features would be included.

No differential signaling = forget about >6Gbit/s.

Keep in mind that although the GTX 480 is coming to market 6+ months later the original taped-out design is no newer/older than Cypress, so there's probably some nice screwup on the MC logic.

or more easier: the left bar = 1gb (which also represents 100% throughout the chart), the right bar = 2gb.

I'm getting tired of all these """"teaser"""" benchmarks. Most probably the results are meaningless anyway

What's the point of testing at settings where video card memory becomes limiting?

That's the whole point! it's where nVidia has the biggest advantage, so their pre-release tests look as good as possible

There is a rumor, from Fudo I think, that the 2GB 5870 Eyefinity 6 is pushed back to the end of March. Nvidia will no doubt line up all the "lets run the 5870 out of memory" benchmarks for the Fermi launch. And there's nothing wrong with trying to make your own product look as good as possible. AMD could counter by releasing the 2GB on the same day.

Anyway, the Eyefinity 6 was originally supposed to launch March 11, so we'll see if any reviews popup tonight.

I don't know much about the technical stuff but is running out of memory the most likely reason for this results? Or is 4x0 simply faster? ~200MB diff doesn't look much, but like I said, I know little about that.

Not to burst your bubble here ;-), but shot of HAWX above is still on average faster on 5870 than 470(i hope thats 470 and not 480...),max fps are higher too, MUCH lower min fps however suggests that 5870 runs out of memory in few places ;-)

I see, no bubble is in danger of being burst I assure you, I am an amd fan but I'm not tied to any single brand, I buy whatever is in line with my preferences.

No, if a card runs out of memory, the minimum framerate would be in the single digits.
