    Cruncher Lingo Dictionary

So, decided if we're going to get serious about recruiting more members, we should have a dictionary for them to find out WTF we're talking about.

Cuz I know the first time I came here I thought you were crazy... Didn't really KNOW it till a few weeks later though. So anyway, Onward:

    36362: best F@H team

Crunching: The process of a computer taking a Work Unit (WUs) and 'crunching' the numbers to calculate their way to the 'answer'.

    DC: distributed computing

Downtime: Time for upgrading or maintenance otherwise - WHY AREN'T YOU CRUNCHING?!?!

Farm: That pile of silicon and fans sitting in heaps around these people's houses. (and of course others)

EL WU: -bigadv work units (expand with a link)

    F@H: Folding at Home

Folding: A different way of approaching the same problem as crunching, but instead of crunching numbers to arrive at a conclusion, a model is made of how the individual ammino acids inside of a protein fold and how this effects that proteins structure. (And therefore how it effects the cell)

Idle: The worst sin your computer can commit.

PHII/P II/P-II/PII/P2: Phenom II and NOT Pentium II

    Pie: Your daily goal. Mmmh...
(The break down of the top 10 contributes of each day)

    PPD: Points Per Day

    Rig: computer

    Setup: computer

    SMP: Symmetric Multiprocessing

    ST/strig/st rig: SkullTrail

WUs: Work Unit, the small packets sent out to individual computers to be "crunched"

    WCG: World Community Grid

    WAF: Wife Acceptance Factor

*Points are boinc and credits are wcg specific (~ boinc points * 7)

so when using GPUgrid, is that folding or crunching? i'm assuming folding is for GPU's and crunching is for CPU's?

Folding is for protein folding, specifically it's for running Folding@Home. Crunching is pretty much everything else, regardless of the type of processor used.

"downtime" is slang for "upgrading or maintenance time"
    also:
    "Boxen" = rig
