Need help from you AMD guys!!!!!!

Alright so,

I just started putting together an AMD build for my friend, and last night after all the pieces were delivered we got down to business. The mobo and cpu combo we got are AMD Phenom II 940 Black Edition and ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO/U3S6 AM3 AMD 785G. The main problem I am having is the CPU will not seat into the motherboard, after close inspection of the CPU with a magnifying glass I found no bent pins or anything out of the ordinary and nothing looks wrong with the motherboard, I have lots of experience seating chips so I know I had everything lined up right but for some reason it just will not seat to be more specific the corners and edges will seat when angled but somewhere in the middle the processor will not go down, I am wondering if any of you have had experience with this could it be a motherboard flaw or am I just an idiot and missing something?

unfortunately phenom 2 940 is am2, the motherboard you got is am3

Picture?? It seems strange, ihave built many many AMD systems and have never had an issue. I am not sure what it is.

if you could uynserstand how much of a tool I feel like right now, I thought it was AM3. I guess I need to learn more about amd =p

partially neweggs fault im guessing as that mobo has socket am2+ listed which is why it had a combo w/ 940be but really its am3 socket which arent backwards compatible with am2 chips. your choices are get an am3 cpu & keep your mobo, or get an am2+ mobo & keep your cpu. id just look for an am2 mobo obviously

I just wanted to say thanks again for the help guys! I got my buddies computer up and running and he is loving it! Kind of makes me want to build an AMD rig, heh heh.

Not if he bought DDR3 though.......hed be in the same problem again except with the ram.

Electric Wizard what ram did you buy?? if you bought DDR2 then you need to just get a AM2+ mobo but if you bought DDR3 then you need a AM3 mobo.

So the combination of parts will look like this

940 am2+ cpu
AM2+ mobo
DDR2

or

If you send back the combo

AM3 cpu
AM3 mobo
DDR3

If you have DDR2 it will not fit in a AM3 mobo and if you have a AM2+ cpu it will not run in a newer AM3 mobo. But a newer AM3 cpu will run on a AM2+ mobo.

Backwards compatability of the cpu only!

There are two Phenom II parts that uses a Socket AM2 package instead of the Socket AM3 one, those are the Phenoms II X4 920 and 940 with OPNs HDX920XCJ4DGI and HDZ940XCJ4DGI.
I consider a fairly stupid move by AMD than they released those Processors with Socket AM2 package, as you can't use them in a Socket AM3 Motherboard even though being the same physical Deneb cores, so they DO have the DDR-III IMC. All the others uses a Socket AM3 package and are compatible with both AM2 and AM3 Motherboards.

Don't feel so bad. It's an easy mistake to make. The original run of the 940/920 are the only current amd cpu's that don't work with both am2/am3. I believe all the model's after the 940 have a couple extra cpu pins.
