We know GPU makers are past that. Maybe not SIMD cores, but definitely the upper clock limits can be tampered with.

In addition to Redwood, AMD is cooking up yet another card that should show its face by the end of this month, probably on January 25th, the HD 5830. According to our info, the card should have a suggested retail price of US $239.

Following its well known naming scheme from the HD 4000 series, the HD 5830 should be quite similar to the HD 5850 as it might be even based on the same PCB and even use the same cooler. The exact clocks or number of shader processors are still blurry, but considering the fact that it will have a lot in common with the HD 5850 you can expect it to use GDDR5 memory.

The card should fill the gap between the HD 5850 and the HD 5770, while performance should be similar to the HD 4890, but this time with DirectX 11 support.

I applaud this development. Hopefully we can see some nice low power DX11 budget cards soon as well. Not many people play games, and some go for ultra low power cards with great video processing engines.

You know what? ATi has got one of the most confusing, annoying product names in history. If you are actually looking to purchase anything but the high end, I've found myself really scratching my head. Especiallly in trying to remember the names. Yes, it does make sense if you think about it, but it's like numeric dyslexia, it all looks the same to me.

You can say a lot about nVidia with all the renaming, but I do like the GTxxx naming scheme.

AMD Radeon HD 5830 issue found during validation process
Although AMD is reportedly prepping its Radeon HD 5830 graphics chip for imminent launch, sources at motherboard makers are saying issues have arisen with reference boards during the validation process.

AMD responded to the report by stating the products are among its customers, who are currently undertaking their normal tests. Concerning any issues with the product, AMD said it does not comment on unannounced products nor respond to market rumors.

AMD has not set a launch date, but if the issue is serious, it may be difficult for AMD to opt for an early February launch.

I can somewhat confirm that the release date was pushed back once and that some of our contacts have been hinting at issues during their normal QA process over the last week or so. If anything, I would expect to see reviews come up of either hand-picked or modified reference cards come release followed by reviews of actual retail cards about a week later if there is a serious problem. However, if it isn't a huge problem we'll see the usual reviews and availability shortly thereafter.

what kind of issues? did they build it not to be overclocked and ended up making the heatsink or vrms too weak? i doubt the chips could be the problem if they are chopping off the bad part of the 1600SP source chip

People are being mum about the exact issue. Could be anything from non-boot like what happened with DFI + HD 4870 X2 cards to problems with the cards themselves when placed in certain operating conditions.

Somehow though, I expect these are issues that can easily be resolved since the HD 5830 isn't that dissimilar from other HD 5000 series cards.

£200 seems a little high unless it includes VAT as 5850 is available in some places for £190+VAT.

If a pair costs a little over 5870 and performs between 5870 and 5950 I can see it being a good option for those of us clinging on to X38s.

Radeon HD 5830 new prices, specifications
The turns have been many regarding Radeon HD 5830. We shared the first bits back in early January and this initial source spoke of a launch on January 25th and performance on par with Radeon HD 4890. Since then the launch date has changed several times during our talks with manufacturers and informed sources. No one seems to know the exact launch date right now, but we at least know that the MSRP will be around 240€ and we know a bit more on the specifications.

As expected we're dealing with a stripped down version of ATI Radeon HD 5850 where the number of stream processors have been reduced to 1280 and the number of texture units are now 60, which is slightly less than the 1440 / 72 combo of Radeon HD 5850.

The clock frequency will be slightly higher, 750MHz, while the GDDR5 memory will operate at the same clock frequency as bigger brother, 1000MHz (4000MHz effective clock frequency)........

Yeah, agreed. It's just a bit weird that the article mentioned 1280 SPs & 60 TMUs combo specification. I think we all know that in RV8xx mArch, TMU cluster is tied with SIMD array.

Looks like this may be what im looking for. Just going to take a wild stab in the dark at a guess off the GPU Spec. 1280 / 64 / 32 / 256-bit. Core = approx 625mhz. Memory approx 3800mhz. Manufactures can and will make different designs. expect a weaker PWM area.

Like i said though, just guessing here. If it is as i guess, then i look forward to it. If not, then have to think! Please no take what im saying as truth. It's just a guess!
