    Strange a64 3200 problem

Had this system for a while

    a64 3200
    kingston pc 3000 (bh5)
    9800se softmodded
    gigabyte k8n non pro

but it would never overclock very well, could get 2319mhz 3dbenchable but that was it. Today I got a new psu, tagan 480w which is meant to be very good. Rails are all fine.

If i use the 9.0x multi i can do 261htt 213 mem and it runs 3dmark fine. But if I use 10.0x i cannot bench 2340 (234 htt)

Also running 1:1 I cannot go above 225. This may be a ram limitation, i have no voltmods but i thought 225 would be attainable with 2.8v.

    Temps are fine 44C load @ 1.7v.

Also (but less important) even using 2x htt I cannot go above 280mhz at all, I have read about people getting well over 300 at 2x.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks L

Ok it passed prime 95 at 220 1:1 for 30 mins, thats easily stable enough for benching. However, if i try and use cas 2.5 and any ratio other than 1:1 the computer resets. A little strange.

225 is completely unstable for prime but might be ok for 3dmark however i need it to go to 234 to make running 1:1 worthwhile. Im guessing this will need the vdimm modd.

I think i have solved another problem, by flashing back to bios f9 i can raise the htt much higher and it doesnt lock up. 293 has crashed in 3dmark however

    will keep trying.

update: actually no it didnt help in fact is has made it worse! Cant run 9x261 any more it freezes in 3dmark, nothing has changed except the bios. I will keep trying!

you dont have pci locks, also high fsb is very hard on your mobo's northbridge. I doubt my nf7-s will do past 260fsb, thats amazing you are getting near 300MHz. you could do the vdimm mod but beware, the ondie memory controller does not have the high volt tolerance which the ram does. maybe get pc3700? it runs cas 2.5 so its not bad and you should do 240-250fsb with that ram

At first i thoght you had mistaken the mobo for a nForce2 mobo, then you start talking about the on-die memory controller which indicates that you are aware of it beeing a nForce3 mobo for a A64.

    The nForce3 hasn´t got a northbridge dude

Also, you can not compare running high FSB on a nForce2 with running high FSB(HTT) on a nForce3. Most nForce3 mobos will do 300+ FSB unmodded as there is no NB to hold you back.

About running high vdimm i would say 3.2 is fairly safe. I have been running 3.4-3.6 the last couple of months, and everyting is working fine.

It might be your diskdrive holding you back. When aporaching 45-50Mhz PCI speed many HD´s crap out. I hear seagate can take very high PCI-bus, and WD is not to bad either. Both my WD30BB and WD120JB are happy with 320+ FSB.

Try another HD if you have one.. it might do the trick.

I have a wd drive atm, also have a moxtor connected, i will try disconnecting that and let you kbow how i get on.

Also which bios is best for this? I tried f9 and it didnt oc as well but it might just have been a bad night, if others have had more success i can give it another try.

With SATA drives connected i can run 245, but that's about it... without them over 330.
I used to have links here demonstrating how awesome I am, but it's been so long that they're not very relevant (and the pictures have disappeared), so I guess I'll have to get working on new stuff.

there's no NB on any AMD64 mobo

You need either a PCI RAID card or Seagate Barracuda IV harddrive. The highest i could get out of Gigabyte mobo was 360fsb running 2x LDT with Speculative TLB Reloads Disabled in bios.

Clockgen locks the PCI up. I could get to 225 on my K8NNXP, but using clockgen SATA works at 260 easily.
